About
Firefly is a Malaysian regional airline and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines. Founded on April 3, 2007, Firefly was established to serve underserved domestic routes and provide convenient regional connectivity for Malaysian travelers.
The airline operates a mixed fleet of ATR 72-500 turboprops and Boeing 737-800 jets, serving domestic destinations within Malaysia as well as international routes to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Firefly is known for operating from the smaller, more accessible Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang near Kuala Lumpur, offering a convenient alternative to the larger KLIA for passengers in the greater Kuala Lumpur area.
As part of the Malaysia Aviation Group family, Firefly passengers can earn and redeem Enrich frequent flyer miles on their flights. While not a member of any global alliance, Firefly benefits from its integration with Malaysia Airlines' network and loyalty program.

Baggage Policy
Critical: Baggage allowances differ significantly between ATR turboprop and Boeing 737 flights. Check your aircraft type when booking.
Carry-On Allowance
Cabin Bag (same for all flights):
- Dimensions: 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22" x 14" x 9")
- Weight: 7 kg (15 lbs) maximum
- Must fit under seat or in overhead compartment
- One piece per passenger
Personal item: Firefly does not offer a separate personal item allowance. Your 7 kg cabin bag is your only carry-on.
Liquids (international flights): Containers max 100 ml, all must fit in one transparent resealable plastic bag (max 1 liter).
Checked Baggage
| Aircraft Type | Included Allowance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ATR 72-500 | 20 kg FREE | Complimentary on all turboprop flights |
| Boeing 737-800 | 0 kg | No free allowance; must pre-purchase |
This is a significant difference. When comparing Firefly fares, factor in baggage costs for Boeing 737 flights.
Maximum per bag: 32 kg (70 lbs) regardless of total allowance
Additional baggage purchase options:
- 5 kg, 10 kg, 15 kg (for ATR flights needing extra)
- 20 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg, 40 kg (for Boeing flights or heavy packers)
Where to purchase: Online during booking or via Manage Booking. Purchasing at the airport is more expensive.
Special Items
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car seat | Free | |
| Stroller | Free | Gate-check available |
| Wheelchair/mobility aid | Free | Advance notice recommended |
Tips to Avoid Baggage Fees
- Check aircraft type: ATR flights include 20 kg free; Boeing flights do not
- Book baggage online: Always cheaper than airport counter
- Travel light on Boeing routes: Consider carry-on only if possible
- Compare total costs: A cheaper Boeing fare may cost more after adding baggage
Fees vary by route. Verify at fireflyz.com.my/baggage before booking.
In-Flight Experience
ATR 72-500 Experience
Firefly's turboprop service is straightforward and efficient:
Seating:
- 2-2 configuration throughout
- No business class
- Every seat is window or aisle
- Standard legroom for regional turboprop
Service:
- Complimentary light refreshments (water, peanuts) on most flights
- Buy-on-board snacks and drinks available
- Flight attendants provide safety briefings in Malay and English
Entertainment:
- No seatback screens
- No WiFi
- Bring your own entertainment for flights over 30 minutes
What to expect: ATR flights are functional regional hops. Flights are typically 45-90 minutes, so limited onboard amenities aren't a significant drawback. The aircraft flies at lower altitudes and may experience more turbulence than jets.
Boeing 737-800 Experience
Firefly's jet service offers a more conventional airline experience:
Seating:
- 3-3 configuration (189 seats)
- No business class; all economy
- Standard seat pitch (30-31 inches)
- Middle seats are present
Service:
- Buy-on-board meals and snacks
- Drinks available for purchase
- Fuller service compared to ATR flights
Entertainment:
- No seatback screens
- No WiFi
- Bring your own device and content
Food & Beverage
Firefly is not a full-service carrier. Expect:
- ATR flights: Complimentary light snacks on most routes; limited buy-on-board options
- Boeing flights: More extensive buy-on-board menu; no complimentary food in economy
Pre-order meals: Not typically available; buy on board or eat before your flight.
Tips & Tricks
Booking
- Compare aircraft types: ATR includes baggage; Boeing does not
- Book direct: fireflyz.com.my for best flexibility and Enrich earning
- Check Subang vs KLIA: Know which airport your flight uses
- Pre-purchase baggage: Always cheaper online than at the airport
Choosing Subang vs KLIA
Fly from Subang (SZB) when:
- You're staying in central Kuala Lumpur or western Klang Valley
- You want a quick, no-hassle airport experience
- You're flying ATR routes (Penang, Langkawi, Singapore, domestic)
Fly from KLIA when:
- You're connecting to/from Malaysia Airlines international flights
- You're flying Boeing 737 routes (Kota Kinabalu, international)
- You're staying near KLIA or southern areas
At the Airport
- Subang: Small terminal, fast processing. Parking is convenient and affordable.
- Arrive on time but don't over-prepare: 60-90 minutes is sufficient for most Firefly flights
- Download boarding pass: Mobile boarding passes work at all Firefly stations
On ATR Flights
- Expect turboprop characteristics: Louder, lower-flying, may feel different from jets
- Bring entertainment: No screens or WiFi
- Window or aisle: 2-2 config means no middle seats
- Ear pressure: Turboprops fly lower; some passengers find ear pressure more noticeable
On Boeing 737 Flights
- Pre-purchase baggage: No free allowance on 737 flights
- Budget extra: Add baggage costs when comparing fares
- Standard experience: Similar to other economy carriers in the region
Earning Enrich Miles
- Add your Enrich number: Enter during booking and confirm at check-in
- Keep boarding passes: In case of missing miles
- Check posting: Allow 2-4 weeks for miles to credit
Common Pitfalls
- Baggage surprise: Boeing 737 flights have NO free checked baggage
- Wrong airport: Know if you're flying from Subang or KLIA
- Elite benefits: Don't assume Malaysia Airlines elite perks transfer to Firefly
- Carry-on only: Just 7 kg with no separate personal item
Best Value
Firefly offers genuine value for:
- Subang convenience: Time savings vs KLIA are significant
- Short domestic hops: ATR flights with 20 kg baggage included
- Singapore runs: Quick, convenient SZB-SIN service
Compare total cost (including baggage) against Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia before booking, especially for Boeing 737 routes.
