Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) is Singapore's main international airport, about 20 km northeast of the city centre. It is easy to navigate once you separate the airport into two parts: Terminals 1, 2 and 3 form the connected main complex, while Terminal 4 is a separate building reached by shuttle bus.

Airlines can use more than one Changi terminal, so check your flight rather than relying on an airline list. The free Skytrain and indoor walking routes link T1, T2 and T3 in both the public and transit areas. Terminal 4 has free public-area and transit-area shuttle buses.

Jewel Changi Airport is landside. It connects directly to the Terminal 1 Arrival Hall and by link bridge to T2 and T3, but a transit passenger must clear Singapore arrival immigration before visiting it. Save Jewel for a layover only if you can enter Singapore and have enough time to return through departure formalities.

Good news: you can transfer between T1, T2 and T3 without clearing immigration when your baggage is checked through. Use the free Skytrain or the transit-area travellators. For T4, use the free transit shuttle when your itinerary is through-checked to the final destination.

Terminal Connectivity

T1, T2 and T3 form an integrated complex:

• The complimentary Skytrain operates from 5:00 AM to 2:00 AM in both public and transit areas.
• If the Skytrain is closed, use the 24-hour walking routes and travellators between T1, T2 and T3.

Terminal 4 is separate. A complimentary transit shuttle runs all day, roughly every eight minutes; the airport estimates 10-18 minutes on the bus depending on the terminal pair. This airside option is for passengers whose itinerary and baggage are through-checked. If they are not, follow your airline's instructions and be prepared to enter Singapore, collect baggage and re-check it.

How much connection time to allow

Use the connection time accepted by your airline for a protected through ticket. Once you arrive, confirm the next terminal and gate before stopping for food or attractions. A T4 connection needs more movement time than a T1-T3 connection, even though the transit bus itself is free and frequent.

On separate tickets, treat the connection as a new departure: entry eligibility, baggage collection, check-in cut-offs and security all matter. Do not use the airside T4 shuttle assumption unless the airline confirms that your itinerary and baggage are through-checked.

Watch out for Jewel: Jewel is in the public area, not the transit area. Visiting it requires clearing arrival immigration and later completing departure formalities again.

Singapore Changi is approximately 20 km from the city centre. The MRT is usually the best-value choice with manageable luggage; a taxi or private-hire car is easier late at night or with several bags. Travel times to popular areas vary with the route and traffic:

• City Hall/Marina Bay: 25-35 minutes
• Orchard Road: 25-35 minutes
• Sentosa: 35-45 minutes
• Chinatown: 30-40 minutes

Transport options include MRT (train), taxi, Grab (rideshare), and bus. The MRT is efficient and affordable, while taxis and Grab offer door-to-door convenience.

Grab is the dominant rideshare app in Singapore (Uber exited the market in 2018). Download the Grab app before arrival. Pickup points are at the arrival halls of all terminals.

• City center: S$20-35 depending on traffic and time
• Orchard Road: S$20-30
• Sentosa: S$30-45

Taxis are metered and available at taxi stands outside each terminal. Fares to the city center are typically S$20-40. Additional charges apply:

• Airport surcharge: S$3-5 (depending on pickup location)
• Peak hour surcharge: 25% (Mon-Fri 6-9:30am, Mon-Sun 6pm-midnight)
• Midnight surcharge: 50% (midnight-6am)
• CBD surcharge: Additional S$3 for city destinations

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is the straightforward public-transport choice for central Singapore. Changi Airport station (CG2) connects directly to Terminals 2 and 3.

1. From T2 or T3, follow signs to Changi Airport MRT station. From T1, take the Skytrain or walk to T2 or T3. From T4, take the free public shuttle to T2/MRT.
2. Take the airport branch to Tanah Merah (EW4/CG) and transfer to the East-West Line toward the city.
3. For a destination on the Downtown Line, you can instead change at Expo (CG1/DT35).

Train times vary by day and destination. Check the SMRT journey planner before a very early departure or late arrival; do not assume that the network's general closing time is the last useful connection.

Paying for the MRT and bus

You can tap an accepted contactless bank card or mobile wallet, or use an EZ-Link/NETS stored-value card or Singapore Tourist Pass. SimplyGo accepts foreign-issued American Express, Mastercard and Visa cards, but foreign-card fees and your bank's charges can apply. Use the same card or device to tap in and out.

Public buses

Public buses 24, 27, 34, 36, 44, 53, 110 and 858 serve Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Services 24, 34, 36, 44 and 110 also serve Terminal 4; for 27, 53 or 858, use the free T2-T4 shuttle. A bus can be convenient for a destination on its route, but the MRT is easier to understand for most first-time trips to central Singapore.

Changi offers parking at all terminals:

• T1/T2/T3: Short-term parking from S$2.50/half-hour (first 10 min free)
• T1/T2/T3: Long-term from S$8/day (if booked online via iChangi app)
• T4: From S$2/half-hour

Standard rates (without pre-booking):

• Short-term: S$3.50-4/half-hour
• Daily maximum: S$24-38 depending on terminal and car park

Pre-booking via the iChangi app or Changi Airport website typically saves 30-50%. Car parks are located within walking distance of terminals.

Prices are reasonable and include generous data allowances. Most tourist SIMs provide 50-100GB of data for S$12-20. Purchase after clearing immigration at Changi Recommends counters or convenience stores like 7-Eleven.

ATMs are located throughout all terminals, both before and after immigration:

• DBS, OCBC, UOB: Major Singapore banks (no foreign ATM fees for some international cards)
• Citibank: In Terminal 3

Most ATMs dispense Singapore dollars (SGD). Some accept international cards from Visa, Mastercard, and Cirrus/Plus networks. Foreign transaction fees depend on your card issuer.

Currency Exchange:
