About

DEFUNCT AIRLINE: Sriwijaya Air ceased independent operations in late 2021, with its brand retired and operations absorbed into NAM Air (IN), a Garuda Indonesia subsidiary. This guide provides historical information. For current travel within Indonesia, refer to Garuda Indonesia, NAM Air, or Lion Air.

Sriwijaya Air was an Indonesian domestic airline headquartered in Jakarta. Named after the ancient Srivijaya empire that ruled the Indonesian archipelago from the 7th to 13th centuries, the airline was founded in 2003 and grew to become one of Indonesia's largest domestic carriers, operating Boeing 737 aircraft across the archipelago.

At its peak, Sriwijaya Air operated approximately 50 aircraft serving over 50 domestic destinations and limited international routes to Malaysia, Singapore, and East Timor. The airline positioned itself as a value-oriented full-service carrier, competing with low-cost carriers like Lion Air while maintaining onboard meal service and reasonable baggage allowances.

In 2016, Sriwijaya Air was acquired by Garuda Indonesia through its subsidiary NAM Air, though it initially continued operating under its own brand. Following the tragic SJ182 accident in January 2021 and ongoing financial difficulties, the Sriwijaya Air brand was gradually phased out, with all operations merged into NAM Air by the end of 2021.
