About

Jazz Aviation LP is Canada's largest regional airline, operating exclusively as Air Canada Express under a capacity purchase agreement (CPA) with Air Canada. Headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Jazz is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chorus Aviation Inc., a publicly traded aviation holding company.

Important: Jazz Aviation does not sell tickets directly to passengers. All Jazz-operated flights are marketed and sold as Air Canada Express flights. When you book a flight operated by Jazz, you purchase your ticket through Air Canada. The flight will appear with an Air Canada flight number, even though the aircraft and crew belong to Jazz Aviation.

History

Jazz traces its origins to 1963 when its predecessor airlines began regional operations in Canada. The airline operated under various names throughout its history, including Air Canada Regional and Air Canada Jazz (2001-2011), before becoming Jazz Aviation LP in 2011. The "Jazz" branding was introduced in 2002 when Air Canada consolidated its regional carriers under a single brand.

Key milestones:

  • 1963: Predecessor regional airlines established
  • 1996: Air Nova, Air Ontario, Air Alliance, and Canadian Regional Airlines operating regionally
  • 2000: Air Canada acquires Canadian Airlines, bringing together multiple regional carriers
  • 2001: Regional carriers consolidated under "Air Canada Jazz" brand
  • 2006: Jazz Air Income Fund spun off from Air Canada (now Chorus Aviation)
  • 2011: Rebranded as Jazz Aviation LP
  • 2015: Extended capacity purchase agreement with Air Canada through 2025
  • 2019: CPA extended through 2035 with aircraft modernization commitments
  • 2023-2024: Fleet modernization with Embraer E175 and De Havilland Dash 8-400

Jazz operates over 700 daily departures to approximately 80 destinations across Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean, providing essential regional connectivity to Air Canada's hub network.

Regional Aircraft Considerations:

Tip: On CRJ and Dash 8 aircraft, a soft-sided bag or backpack has a better chance of fitting in the overhead bin than a hard-sided roller bag.

Tips & Tricks

Booking

  • Book through Air Canada: Always book via aircanada.com for best service and Aeroplan credit
  • Identify the operator: Check "operated by" information to know which aircraft type to expect
  • Connection times: Allow at least 60-90 minutes when connecting to/from Jazz flights at YYZ
  • Same ticket: Always book regional connections on the same ticket as mainline flights for delay protection

At the Airport

  • Use the Air Canada app: Mobile boarding passes work seamlessly
  • YYZ connections: Allow extra time; Terminal 1 is large
  • Smaller airports: Some Jazz destinations have limited flight frequency and facilities
  • Weather considerations: Regional routes can be more susceptible to weather delays

During the Flight

  • Pack light carry-ons: Soft bags work better in CRJ/Dash 8 overhead bins
  • Gate-check advantage: Free gate-check means your bag arrives on the jet bridge, not baggage claim
  • Bring entertainment: No seatback screens on regional aircraft
  • Power planning: Bring a portable charger; USB power not available on all aircraft
  • No middle seats: The 2-2 configuration means you'll always have a window or aisle

Understanding Regional Operations

  • Smaller aircraft: Regional jets and turboprops are more sensitive to weather
  • Smaller airports: Some Jazz destinations have basic terminal facilities
  • Essential connectivity: Jazz provides crucial links to communities across Canada
  • Air Canada integration: Jazz flights function identically to mainline Air Canada from a passenger perspective

Best Seat Choices

E175 (where Business Class available):

  • Business Class: Single seats (A seats) offer maximum privacy
  • Economy: Rows closest to front for faster deplaning

CRJ-900:

  • Rows 5-10: Good balance of legroom and overhead bin access
  • Avoid back rows: Near lavatory, last to deplane

Dash 8-400:

  • Front of cabin: Less propeller noise
  • Avoid rows directly over wings: Can be noisier on turboprop
  • Exit row: May have extra legroom (varies by configuration)
