🇭🇺
Hungary
Schengen Area member. ETIAS required for visa-exempt nationals from 2025
Overview
Hungary is a landlocked Central European country that has become one of the region's most popular tourist destinations. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is the country's sole major international gateway, serving as a significant base for Wizz Air, Europe's largest ultra-low-cost carrier.
For international travelers, Budapest offers excellent value and strong air connectivity despite Hungary having only one major commercial airport. The country's central European location makes it easily accessible from across Europe, with Wizz Air and Ryanair providing extensive low-cost options. Budapest is increasingly popular for city breaks, combining historic architecture, thermal baths, and vibrant nightlife at relatively affordable prices.
Hungary is an EU member state but retains its own currency, the Hungarian Forint (HUF), rather than the Euro. The country is part of the Schengen Area, allowing free movement within the zone.
Major Airports

| Airport | City | Role | Major Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| BUD | Budapest | Primary international hub | Wizz Air, Ryanair, LOT |
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD)
Hungary's only major international airport, located 16 km southeast of Budapest city center:
- Terminals: Terminal 2A (Schengen), Terminal 2B (non-Schengen)
- Wizz Air: Major base with extensive European and Middle Eastern network
- Ryanair: Significant presence with UK, Irish, and European routes
- Other carriers: LOT, Lufthansa, British Airways, Turkish Airlines
- Ground transport: Bus 100E to city center (35 min), train to Nyugati station via Ferihegy station
- Minimum connection: 45-60 min between terminals
Regional Airports
Hungary has several smaller airports, but they have minimal scheduled commercial service:
- Debrecen (DEB): Limited seasonal and charter flights in eastern Hungary
- Balaton/Heviz-Balaton (SOB): Seasonal service to Lake Balaton region
- Gyor-Per: Private aviation only
For practical purposes, BUD serves all of Hungary's commercial aviation needs.
Airlines
Flag Carrier
Hungary no longer has a national flag carrier since Malev Hungarian Airlines ceased operations in 2012. The market is now dominated by low-cost carriers.

Wizz Air (W6) is headquartered in Budapest and treats BUD as a major base:
- Europe's largest ultra-low-cost carrier
- Extensive network across Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia
- Modern Airbus A320/A321 fleet
- Wizz Air Abu Dhabi partnership extends reach
- Budget pricing with unbundled fares
Ryanair (FR) has strong Budapest presence:
- Major base at BUD
- Strong UK, Ireland, and Western European connections
- Competitive fares to Mediterranean destinations
Full-Service Carriers
Several legacy carriers serve Budapest with hub connections:
- LOT Polish Airlines — Warsaw connections, Star Alliance
- Lufthansa — Frankfurt/Munich hubs
- Austrian Airlines — Vienna hub (also reachable by train in 2h 30m)
- British Airways — London Heathrow

Domestic flights within Hungary are essentially nonexistent for commercial purposes. The country's compact size (about 500 km east to west) makes flying impractical—ground transport is always faster when factoring in airport time.

Lowest prices except Christmas and New Year period. Cold but atmospheric:
- Budget travelers
- Christmas markets (late November-December)
- Thermal bath season (outdoor baths are spectacular in winter)
Event Timing

Travel Tips
Money
- Currency: Hungarian Forint (HUF). 1 EUR ≈ 390-400 HUF approximately
- Cards: Widely accepted in Budapest, cash useful in rural areas
- ATMs: Widespread. Avoid "dynamic currency conversion"—always pay in HUF
- Tipping: 10-15% at restaurants. Service charge often added (check bill)
Important: Hungary uses the Forint, not the Euro. Some tourist areas accept EUR but at poor rates—always pay in HUF.
Electrical
- Voltage: 230 V / 50 Hz
- Plugs: Type C (Europlug) and Type F (Schuko, grounding clips)
- Adapters: US, UK, and Australian travelers need adapters
- Note: Most phone chargers and laptops are dual-voltage (100-240V)
Connectivity
- Mobile: Major carriers are Telekom (T-Mobile), Vodafone, Yettel (formerly Telenor)
- eSIM: Supported by all major carriers. Airalo, Holafly work well
- WiFi: Free at airport, hotels, many cafes and restaurants
- EU roaming: Free for EU mobile plans
Language
Hungarian (Magyar) is the official language—one of Europe's most unique, unrelated to neighboring languages. English is increasingly spoken in Budapest and tourist areas. German is common among older generations. Basic Hungarian phrases are appreciated:
- Hello: Szia (informal), Jo napot (formal)
- Thank you: Koszonom
- Cheers: Egeszsegere
Safety
Hungary is very safe for tourists. Standard urban precautions apply:
- Watch for pickpockets on public transport and at tourist spots
- Use official taxis with visible company logos or ride-hailing apps (Bolt, Uber)
- Avoid changing money on the street
- Some thermal baths require supervision of belongings in lockers
