🇱🇹

Lithuania

Schengen Area member. ETIAS required for visa-exempt nationals from 2025

Overview

Lithuania is the largest and southernmost of the three Baltic states, located on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. The country serves as an important gateway to the Baltic region and has seen significant aviation growth since joining the EU in 2004 and adopting the Euro in 2015.

Vilnius International Airport (VNO) is the primary gateway, handling most international traffic. Kaunas Airport (KUN) has emerged as a significant Ryanair hub, making Lithuania one of the most accessible Baltic destinations for budget travelers. Lithuania lacks a national flag carrier since the bankruptcy of flyLAL in 2009, but the country is well-served by European low-cost and full-service carriers.

As an EU and Schengen Area member, Lithuania offers seamless travel connections throughout Europe without border controls.

Gateway Airports

VNO Vilnius Primary international gateway Ryanair, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, LOT
KUN Kaunas Major Ryanair hub Ryanair
PLQ Palanga Seasonal coastal airport Limited service

Vilnius International Airport (VNO)

Vilnius Airport is Lithuania's main international gateway, located just 7 km south of the city center. It handles approximately 5 million passengers annually and offers connections to most major European cities.

  • Transport: Bus (1, 2, 3G, 88) to city center in 20 minutes; taxi takes 15 minutes
  • Terminals: Single terminal with two levels (arrivals below, departures above)
  • Airlines: Ryanair, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, airBaltic, Turkish Airlines, Norwegian

Kaunas Airport (KUN)

Kaunas Airport is Lithuania's second-largest airport and a major Ryanair base, located 14 km north of Kaunas city center. It has grown significantly as a budget-friendly alternative to Vilnius.

  • Transport: Bus to Kaunas city center (40 minutes); Vilnius reachable by bus in approximately 1.5 hours
  • Role: Primary Ryanair hub for the Baltic region
  • Note: Good option for travelers visiting both Kaunas and Vilnius, as cities are only 100 km apart

Which airport? VNO for most international flights and full-service carriers. KUN for Ryanair flights, especially if visiting Kaunas or seeking the cheapest fares.

Regional Airports

Palanga (PLQ) serves Lithuania's Baltic coast resort area. Limited year-round service with increased summer connections. Located 7 km from Palanga and 30 km from Klaipeda. Useful for direct beach access or reaching the Curonian Spit.

Airlines

No Flag Carrier

Lithuania does not currently have a national flag carrier. flyLAL operated as the national airline until its bankruptcy in 2009. The market is now served entirely by foreign carriers.

Low-Cost Carriers

Low-cost carriers dominate Lithuanian aviation:

  • Ryanair has a major hub at Kaunas (KUN) and strong presence at Vilnius, offering extensive European network
  • Wizz Air operates numerous routes from Vilnius with focus on Central/Eastern European destinations
  • Norwegian serves select routes seasonally

International Carriers

Several European network carriers serve Lithuania:

  • Lufthansa connects Vilnius to Frankfurt hub
  • LOT Polish Airlines offers connections via Warsaw
  • airBaltic connects to Riga hub with extensive network
  • Turkish Airlines provides connections to Istanbul and beyond
  • SAS serves Scandinavian routes
