Macedonia

North Macedonia is a small landlocked country in the heart of the Balkans, bordered by Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Albania. The country gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and resolved a long-standing naming dispute with Greece in 2019, changing its name from "Macedonia" to "North Macedonia" under the Prespa Agreement. This historic accord opened doors to NATO membership and EU candidate status.

Skopje International Airport (SKP) is the country's main gateway, handling the vast majority of international traffic. The smaller Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) serves the UNESCO-listed Lake Ohrid region, primarily with seasonal charter and low-cost carrier flights. North Macedonia has no current flag carrier since the bankruptcy of MAT Macedonian Airlines in 2009, relying instead on foreign carriers—particularly Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, and Austrian Airlines.

Despite its modest size, North Macedonia offers travelers remarkable diversity: the vibrant, monument-filled capital of Skopje, ancient Lake Ohrid with its Byzantine churches and crystal-clear waters, Ottoman-era bazaars in Bitola, and the rugged peaks of Mavrovo National Park. The country serves as an affordable alternative to more tourist-heavy Balkan destinations, with authentic culture and warm hospitality.

Skopje International Airport (SKP) — North Macedonia's primary airport, located 17km southeast of the capital. Renamed "Alexander the Great Airport" during a 2011 rebranding (part of the "Skopje 2014" project), though this naming was quietly downplayed after the Prespa Agreement with Greece. The single-terminal airport handles approximately 2.5 million passengers annually and serves as the arrival point for most visitors. TAV Macedonia operates the facility under a concession agreement. Bus Line 60 connects to Skopje city center (30 min, 35 MKD), while taxis cost approximately 800-1,200 MKD to central Skopje.

Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) — Small seasonal airport serving the Lake Ohrid tourism region, located 9km from Ohrid town center. Primarily handles summer charter flights from Northern and Western Europe, plus seasonal Wizz Air services. Limited facilities—most international travelers still route through Skopje. The airport experiences dramatic seasonal variation, with minimal winter operations. From the airport, taxis to Ohrid town cost approximately 400-600 MKD.

No Current Flag Carrier

North Macedonia lacks a national airline since the 2009 collapse of MAT Macedonian Airlines. The market is served entirely by foreign carriers:

North Macedonia has a welcoming visa policy. Visa-free entry (up to 90 days in any 180-day period) for citizens of:

• Most Latin American countries
• Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and others

Important: North Macedonia is not in the EU or Schengen Area. Time spent here does not count toward your Schengen 90-day limit—useful for travelers spending extended time in Europe.

Visa Required

Citizens of some African and Asian countries require a visa. Apply at a North Macedonian embassy or consulate.

Passport Requirements

• Valid passport required (ID cards not accepted, even for EU citizens visiting from Schengen)
• Recommended: 6 months validity beyond planned stay

Registration Requirement

Foreign visitors must register with local police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and registered accommodation providers handle this automatically. If staying with friends or in unregistered accommodation, you should technically register at the nearest police station—enforcement varies.

Domestic Flights

North Macedonia is small (approximately 150km x 200km), making domestic flights unnecessary. Skopje to Ohrid is a 2.5-3 hour drive.

The most practical intercity option. Comfortable, frequent, and affordable:

Peak Season (July-August)

Summer brings warm weather (28-35°C in lowlands), busy Lake Ohrid beaches, and the highest prices. Ohrid in particular gets crowded with regional tourists. Book accommodation well ahead for lakeside stays.

Shoulder Season (May-June, September-October)

Best overall. Pleasant temperatures (18-26°C), fewer crowds, lower prices. Ideal for cultural sightseeing, hiking in Mavrovo, and exploring Ohrid before or after the summer rush. Autumn colors in October are beautiful.

Off-Season (November-April)

Cold winters in the mountains, mild in lowlands. Good for:

• Skopje city exploration
• Ski season at Mavrovo (December-March)
• Orthodox Christmas (January 7) and Easter celebrations
• Budget travel with lowest prices
