Overview

Rwanda is a small, landlocked country in East-Central Africa known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills." Despite its compact size, Rwanda has become one of Africa's most accessible destinations thanks to its national carrier RwandAir and significant investment in aviation infrastructure.

Kigali International Airport (KGL) serves as the country's primary gateway and RwandAir's hub, offering connections across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Rwanda is actively expanding its aviation capacity with the under-construction Bugesera International Airport, which will become the new primary international hub upon completion.

Rwanda is celebrated for its mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, remarkably clean cities, and strong focus on sustainable tourism. The country has positioned itself as a premium eco-tourism destination, with efficient infrastructure that makes it easy to navigate despite being a small aviation market.

Kigali International Airport (KGL) — Rwanda's only international airport, located 10 km east of the city center. The airport has a modern terminal completed in 2017 with capacity for 1.5 million passengers annually. Immigration and customs are efficient, and the airport consistently ranks among Africa's cleanest.

Future Development

Bugesera International Airport (BKO) — Currently under construction approximately 40 km southeast of Kigali. Designed to handle 7+ million passengers annually with a modern hub-and-spoke layout. Travelers visiting Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya can obtain a joint East Africa Tourist Visa:

Getting Around

Domestic Flights

Limited domestic air service due to Rwanda's small size. Most destinations are within 3-4 hours by road from Kigali.

Wet Seasons

March-May — Long rains. Heavier rainfall, muddy trails, but fewer tourists and "green season" discounts. Gorilla trekking still possible.
