Singapore

Visa-free for most Western countries (30-90 days), SG Arrival Card required

Overview

Singapore is a city-state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula that punches far above its weight in global aviation. Changi Airport (SIN) is consistently rated the world's best airport, and the country serves as Southeast Asia's premier aviation hub—connecting Europe, Australia, and Asia through its single, exceptional gateway.

Despite being just 733 square kilometers (smaller than New York City), Singapore handles over 60 million passengers annually. The country's strategic location makes it a natural stopover point: roughly 7 hours from both Australia and India, 6 hours from Japan, and 12-13 hours from Europe.

As a city-state, there are no domestic flights—you fly into Changi, and you're in Singapore. The country compensates with world-class public transport: the MRT metro system connects the airport to every corner of this compact nation in under an hour.

Major Airports

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

Singapore has a single airport, but what an airport it is:

Terminal Focus Features
Terminal 1 International mix Renovated, SkyTrain to Jewel
Terminal 2 Star Alliance, regional Under expansion (reopening 2025)
Terminal 3 Singapore Airlines, oneworld Butterfly garden, entertainment deck
Terminal 4 LCCs, some full-service Automated, modern design
Jewel Transit/landside attraction Indoor waterfall, gardens, shopping

Changi (SIN) — Repeatedly voted the world's best airport by Skytrax. Famous for its gardens, swimming pool, movie theaters, and the stunning Jewel complex featuring the world's tallest indoor waterfall. Even long layovers become enjoyable experiences.

Terminal layout: Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected airside via the SkyTrain (free monorail). Terminal 4 is separate—allow 15-20 minutes transfer time via shuttle bus. Jewel connects to Terminals 1, 2, and 3 landside.

City connection: MRT (East-West Line) from Terminals 2 and 3 to city center in 30-40 minutes. Taxi to central Singapore: 20-40 SGD ($15-30), 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Pro tip: Changi offers free city tours for transit passengers with 5.5-7+ hour layovers. Book at transit counters in arrival halls.

Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit system is world-class:

  • Fares: Airport to city 20-40 SGD depending on time/location

Walking

Singapore is compact and walkable in many areas, though the heat and humidity make air-conditioned transport preferable for longer distances. Underground malls connect many MRT stations in the city center.

Ferries

Ferries to nearby islands (Sentosa, Batam/Bintan in Indonesia):

  • Sentosa: Monorail, cable car, or walk across bridge
  • Indonesia: Ferries from Tanah Merah and HarbourFront (passport required)

Car Rental

Generally not recommended:

  • Excellent public transport makes it unnecessary
  • One of the world's most expensive places to own/operate a car
  • Complex ERP (electronic road pricing) system
  • Parking expensive and limited

Best Time to Visit

These laws are enforced. Singapore is orderly because rules are followed.

  • Klook: Attraction tickets often discounted

Weather Preparedness

  • Carry umbrella or rain jacket
  • Stay hydrated—humidity is intense
  • Sunscreen essential
  • Duck into malls for air-conditioned breaks
