Overview
Uruguay is South America's second-smallest country, nestled between Argentina and Brazil along the Atlantic coast. Despite its compact size—roughly the area of Washington state—it offers a distinctive travel experience with colonial cities, beach resorts, and a relaxed gaucho culture. Montevideo, the capital, combines historic old town charm with a modern waterfront promenade.
Carrasco International Airport (MVD) in Montevideo serves as Uruguay's main international gateway, handling virtually all overseas arrivals. The country's small size means most destinations are reachable by ground transportation within a few hours. Punta del Este (PDP) operates as a secondary airport serving the famous beach resort, with seasonal traffic during the Southern Hemisphere summer.
Uruguay is known for its political stability, progressive social policies, and high quality of life by regional standards. The country operates on UTC-3 year-round, the same timezone as Buenos Aires, making cross-border travel straightforward.
Major Airports
International Gateway
| Airport | City | Role | Major Airlines |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVD | Montevideo | Primary international hub | Aerolineas Argentinas, LATAM, Copa, Azul |
| PDP | Punta del Este | Beach resort, seasonal | Aerolineas Argentinas, charter flights |
Primary Hub
Carrasco International Airport (MVD) — Uruguay's main airport, located 19km east of central Montevideo. The modern terminal building, designed by architect Rafael Vinoly, opened in 2009. Handles international flights from Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Lima, Panama City, and Santiago. Ground transportation to central Montevideo takes 25-40 minutes by taxi or bus.
Secondary Airport
Captain Corbeta C. A. Curbelo International Airport (PDP) — Serves Punta del Este and the eastern beach resorts. Primarily active during summer season (December-February) with flights from Buenos Aires and regional charter services. Limited scheduled service during low season. Located 25km from Punta del Este center.
Cross-Border Options
Due to Uruguay's small size and limited direct international flights, travelers sometimes find better routings through:
- Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) — 2.5-hour ferry + bus from Montevideo via Colonia
- Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) — Short flights to MVD, or ferry connections
- Porto Alegre (POA) — Brazilian gateway for southern access
Airlines
Flag Carrier
Uruguay currently has no flag carrier. The former national airline, PLUNA, ceased operations in 2012. The market is now served entirely by foreign carriers.
