Seoul Airport Guide

Incheon International Airport (ICN) is South Korea's main international gateway, on Yeongjong Island west of Seoul. The airport is large but legible once you know one thing: Terminal 1, its satellite Concourse, and Terminal 2 are separate facilities, and the correct route depends on whether you are transferring airside or moving landside.

ICN has two main passenger terminals:

• Terminal 1: Connected airside to a separate Concourse by shuttle train
• Terminal 2: A distinct terminal several kilometers from Terminal 1

Good news: eligible international transfer passengers can follow the green transfer signs and use the airport's airside shuttle-train system without entering Korea. The catch: landside passengers cannot walk between Terminals 1 and 2. Landside choices are the free airport shuttle bus or a short paid ride on the Airport Railroad. Check your airline's terminal before traveling; airline assignments can change.

Gimpo Airport (GMP)

Seoul's other airport, Gimpo Airport (GMP), handles many domestic flights and some short-haul international services. The AREX all-stop train links ICN directly with Gimpo Airport station; Incheon Airport advises a planning time of roughly 30–40 minutes, depending on your ICN terminal and service.

If you are switching airports on separate tickets, leave room for immigration, baggage collection, the rail journey, the walk into the correct Gimpo terminal, bag drop, and security. Ask the airline whether baggage can be checked through—do not assume it will be.

The first question is whether your itinerary keeps you airside. A protected international connection and a self-transfer use different systems, even when both involve the words “shuttle” and “Terminal 2.”

International-to-international transfers

1. Follow the green Transfer signs from the arrival gate.
2. Complete transfer security when directed.
3. If your next flight uses another terminal or the Concourse, follow the signs down to the airside shuttle train.
4. Get off only at the facility shown for your departure gate; the airport warns that you cannot simply ride back after boarding.

The official transfer maps show shuttle trains boarding about every five minutes. Whether security comes before or after the train depends on your arrival and departure facilities, so use the signed route rather than a generic sequence. If you do not have an onward boarding pass, use the transfer desk near the route to your gate.

Landside movement between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

• Free airport shuttle bus: Board on the departure level—outside Gates 3 or 12 at Terminal 1, or around Gates 6–7 at Terminal 2. The airport currently lists service from early morning until late evening, generally every 7–20 minutes.
• Airport Railroad: This is a paid landside train ride between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Incheon Airport currently estimates about six minutes and lists a KRW 1,050 fare; verify the fare before travel.

Watch out: neither landside option is the airside transfer shuttle train. If you have entered Korea, collected bags, or hold separate tickets, allow time to recheck baggage and clear departure security. Use the minimum connection time supplied by the airline that issued your itinerary; ICN does not publish one universal safe time for every combination.

Best for Seoul Station: take the nonstop AREX Express. Best for Hongdae, Gimpo Airport, or a metro transfer before Seoul Station: take the AREX all-stop train. Both serve Terminals 1 and 2 from the transportation centers on B1.

For planning, official sources put the Express journey to Seoul Station at about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2. Seoul's city government lists about 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and 66 minutes from Terminal 2 on the all-stop service, with some trains taking a few minutes longer.

Airport buses can be the easier choice when one stops close to your hotel, especially with heavy luggage. The tradeoff is traffic: use the airport's live bus search for the route, fare, stop, and last departure on your travel date.

Important: Uber does not work well in South Korea due to local regulations. Use KakaoT (Korea's dominant rideshare app) or official taxis instead.

KakaoT (Recommended Rideshare)

• App: Download "KakaoT" (available in English)
• Payment: Requires Korean payment method or international credit card registration
• Pickup location: Designated rideshare zones at arrivals level
• Typical fare to Seoul: ₩70,000-100,000 depending on destination and traffic

Official Taxis

Taxis queue outside arrivals at both terminals. Two types are available:

Regular Taxi (Orange/Silver):

• To Seoul: ₩65,000-80,000 (metered)
• To Gangnam: ₩70,000-90,000 (metered)

International Taxi (Black):

• Premium service with English-speaking drivers
• Fares approximately 20% higher than regular taxis
• Can be reserved in advance

Tips:

• Taxis accept cash and credit cards
• Late-night surcharge (20%) applies midnight to 4:00 AM
• Expressway tolls (₩7,800-9,000) are extra
• Most taxi drivers speak limited English; have your destination written in Korean

• Terminal 1: Ground floor (1F), outside arrivals hall, taxi stands 4-8
• Terminal 2: Ground floor (1F), outside arrivals hall

AREX Express: simplest for Seoul Station

The Express runs nonstop between the airport terminals and Seoul Station. Buy a ticket for a specific departure and follow the Express Train signs—the Express and all-stop services use different ticketing and platforms. This is the cleanest rail choice if Seoul Station is useful for your hotel or onward train.

AREX all-stop train: best for Hongdae and metro connections

The all-stop service calls at Gimpo Airport, Digital Media City, Hongik University, Gongdeok, and Seoul Station, among other stations. Use it when one of those stops is closer to your destination or provides the better metro transfer. A transport card can simplify onward travel, but confirm the current airport-section fare before boarding.

At both terminals, follow signs to the Transportation Center on B1. Check carefully whether you are entering the Express or all-stop area before passing the gate.

Airport Limousine Buses

Direct airport buses serve Seoul districts, major hotels, and cities outside Seoul. Search by destination on Incheon Airport's official bus page because route numbers, stops, fares, and operating times change. At Terminal 1, ticket booths and bus stops are around the arrivals level; Terminal 2 uses both B1 and the arrivals level depending on the service. Your ticket shows the boarding location.

Late Night Options

Do not assume that a late flight will connect with the last train. Check the live AREX timetable and Incheon Airport's dedicated late-night bus pages before travel. If neither schedule works for your arrival time, plan a taxi or an airport stay in advance.
