Abu Dhabi Airport Guide

Zayed International Airport (AUH), formerly called Abu Dhabi International, now centres its passenger operation in Terminal A. Etihad and the airport's other passenger airlines use the new terminal, so old instructions for moving among Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are obsolete. Check your flight details, but do not build a connection around the former terminal complex.

Terminal A is large: check the screen early and leave time for the walk along its four piers. If you are flying to the United States, Etihad currently says the airport's U.S. preclearance facility is temporarily closed; you complete U.S. immigration and customs after landing until the airline announces otherwise.

Dubai International (DXB)

AUH and Dubai International are different airports in different cities. Treat any AUH–DXB move on separate tickets as a long road transfer with its own check-in deadline, not as an airport connection. Verify baggage handling with the airlines on the actual booking.

Passenger connections are handled within Terminal A. Follow Connections after leaving the aircraft. If you already have a boarding pass, Etihad says you can continue toward your gate; if you need one, use a transfer desk near the Level 3 transfer facility.

Transfer security, passport control, and baggage collection depend on the itinerary. Ask at your origin whether your bag is checked through, and use the operating airline's connection instructions rather than a generic minimum-connection table. Separate tickets may require UAE entry, baggage collection, check-in, and security again.

Etihad Connections

Etihad operates from Terminal A. The terminal uses long corridors and travelators rather than the automated people mover described in older guides, so look up the gate early and leave time to walk.

US Preclearance

Etihad currently says the U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance facility is temporarily closed. Until it reopens, U.S.-bound passengers complete U.S. immigration and customs after landing. Recheck the airline's status page before departure because this is an operational change, not a permanent airport feature.

Immigration for Connecting Passengers

If you can remain in the international connection flow with baggage checked through, follow the transfer signs rather than Arrivals. If you need to collect a bag, change tickets, or leave the airport, check UAE entry requirements for your passport before travel.

For central Abu Dhabi, choose among the A-series city buses, the signed taxi rank, and app-based rides. Yas Island and Khalifa City are much closer to the airport than the Corniche; road times vary with the exact address and traffic. Dubai is a separate intercity journey, so build it around the current road or coach option rather than an old airport-connection estimate.

Use the signed Terminal A taxi rank or the pickup point shown in your ride app. Uber and Careem operate in Abu Dhabi, but a live app quote is more reliable than a fixed fare table. For a metered taxi, confirm the accepted payment method before departure if you do not have dirhams.

City buses leave from the Terminal A bus area. Choose the route for your actual destination rather than assuming every bus is the A1:

• A1 serves the Al Zahiyah area.
• A2 serves Khalifa Street.
• A10 serves Mohammed Bin Zayed City.
• A40 serves Al Shahama.
• K4 serves Khalifa City, while N2 provides an overnight city link.

The airport says the A-series routes run 24 hours a day and a typical ride costs AED 4. You need a Hafilat card: cash is not accepted on the bus. Buy and load the card at a ticket machine, then tap on and off. Check the official route page or the Darbi journey planner for the stop and departure that match your arrival time.

Bus to Dubai

Do not assume the A1 is a direct Dubai bus. Use Abu Dhabi Mobility's current Darbi planner to build a city-bus-plus-intercity journey, check whether your airline offers an eligible coach, or book a direct road transfer. Leave a generous buffer for a separate Dubai flight because traffic, baggage, and the second airport's check-in deadline are all outside AUH's transfer process.

Short-stay parking is a short walk from Terminal A and can be used without a reservation. The airport currently marks long-stay parking as closed, so do not rely on old economy-lot and shuttle instructions. Check the official parking page for the live status, drive-up rates, and any pre-booking offer.

Terminal A offers extensive dining options with a mix of international chains and regional cuisine:

For authentic Emirati flavours, look for restaurants serving dishes such as machboos and Arabic mezze. Use the airport's live restaurant directory rather than an old list for the former terminals.

The airport advertises complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi in Terminal A. Follow the current connection instructions shown in the terminal; old network names from the former terminal complex may no longer apply.

Check the current arrivals directory for mobile-service retailers, or arrange an eSIM before travel. UAE SIM registration requires identity documentation, and visitor plans change too often for an old price-and-data table to be dependable.

ATMs and currency services are available in Terminal A.

• Locations: Check the airport map for the machine nearest your gate or arrivals route
• Currency: UAE Dirhams (AED), pegged to USD at approximately 3.67 AED = $1 USD
• Foreign transaction fees: Vary by your home bank, typically 2-3%

Compare the exchange-rate offer and any fee before accepting it. At an ATM, decline dynamic currency conversion if your own bank offers a better rate.

The UAE is highly card-friendly - credit and debit cards are accepted at most establishments.

Terminal A has extensive duty-free and other retail. Check the airport's live directory for a particular brand or opening time.

• Weather: Extremely hot May-September (40-50C). November-March is pleasant (20-30C).
• Dress Code: Abu Dhabi is more conservative than Dubai. Modest dress appreciated in public areas, especially at mosques. Beachwear only at beaches and pools.
• Alcohol: Available at licensed hotels and restaurants. Not sold in regular shops. Abu Dhabi is stricter than Dubai regarding public consumption.
• Ramadan: During the holy month, eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is prohibited. Restaurants open after sunset.
• Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. 10-15% at restaurants is generous.
• Currency: AED is pegged to USD. Credit cards widely accepted.
• Language: Arabic is official; English is widely spoken.

Getting to Dubai

Many travelers combine Abu Dhabi and Dubai:

For layovers, Yas Island offers the best value due to its proximity to the airport and concentration of attractions.
