About
Amaszonas (officially Linea Aerea Amaszonas S.A.) was Bolivia's largest private airline and a regional carrier specializing in high-altitude operations across the Andes. Founded on October 1, 1998, with scheduled services commencing in 2000, the airline carved out a unique niche serving Bolivia's challenging geography and connecting the country to neighboring South American nations.
The airline's name is a clever pun on the Spanish phrase "a mas zonas" (to more zones), reflecting its mission to expand regional connectivity. Headquartered in Santa Cruz de la Sierra with its primary operational hub at La Paz El Alto International Airport (LPB)—the world's highest international airport at 4,061 meters (13,325 ft)—Amaszonas developed expertise in operating regional jets at extreme altitudes where larger aircraft face significant performance limitations.
Current Status: Amaszonas suspended operations in August 2023 following disputes with aircraft lessors. In November 2023, Bolivia's General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) suspended the airline's Air Operator's Certificate. As of early 2026, the airline has not resumed operations despite ownership changes.

Tips & Tricks
Booking:
- Book directly through amaszonas.com for best fare options
- Compare with Boliviana de Aviacion (BoA) for domestic routes
- International connections often required Santa Cruz routing
At the Airport:
- Arrive early at El Alto—security and check-in can be slow
- Drink water and move slowly at LPB due to altitude (13,325 ft)
- Coca tea available at airport to help with altitude adjustment
High-Altitude Travel:
- If arriving at La Paz from sea level, allow 24-48 hours to acclimatize
- Symptoms of altitude sickness are common; take it easy first day
- Consider routing through Santa Cruz (VVI) at 416 m if altitude-sensitive
Packing:
- No bag fees or seat selection fees were charged
- Layer clothing—La Paz temperatures vary significantly
- Keep medications and essentials in carry-on
Current Alternatives: With Amaszonas suspended, Bolivian travelers can use:
- Boliviana de Aviacion (BoA) - State-owned carrier, domestic and international
- EcoJet - Smaller domestic carrier
