About

Lufthansa is Germany's full-service network airline, operating through Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). It is a founding member of Star Alliance and part of the wider Lufthansa Group. Check the operating carrier on every segment: a Lufthansa-marketed itinerary can include another Group or partner airline with different baggage rules.

As a founding member of Star Alliance (established May 14, 1997), Lufthansa partners with 25 airlines including United, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, and ANA. The airline is known for precision, premium service, and its exceptional First Class product featuring private terminals and limousine service.

Lufthansa is part of the Lufthansa Group, which includes SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and a 41% stake in ITA Airways. Combined, the group operates 735 aircraft.

Baggage Policy

Direct answer: most Lufthansa fares include one personal item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Economy Light, Comfort, and Flex include one cabin bag up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg; Business and First include two. On short- and medium-haul flights, Economy Basic includes only the personal item unless you add a cabin bag or qualify for a published status exception.

Carry-On Allowance

Personal Item (all classes):

  • Slim laptop bag or handbag
  • Maximum 40 × 30 × 15 cm
  • Must fit under seat

  • Weight: 8 kg (18 lbs) maximum—strictly enforced
  • Economy/Premium Economy: 1 bag

Overweight & Oversized Fees

Do not reuse an old flat-fee table. Lufthansa prices extra, heavy, oversize, and sports baggage by itinerary, fare, and purchase channel. Its baggage calculator is the decision source for your flight. The standard checked limit is 158 cm total dimensions, and no accepted passenger bag may weigh more than 32 kg.

Elite Status Baggage Benefits

HON Circle, Senators, and Star Alliance Gold members on intercontinental Economy Light fares receive first checked bag free (at check-in counter only).

Special Items

Sports equipment, child equipment, mobility aids, and musical instruments have item-specific booking and packing rules. Use Lufthansa's Baggage Calculator and the relevant special-baggage page before travel; acceptance is not determined by weight alone.

Baggage:

  • Weigh and measure your carry-on; non-compliant bags can be moved to the hold for a fee
  • Use the Baggage Calculator before booking
  • Status holders get first bag free on Economy Light (intercontinental only)

At the Airport:

  • Frankfurt First Class Terminal is exceptional—arrive early to enjoy it
  • Senator Lounge Z at Frankfurt has good runway views
  • Munich Satellite has roof terrace with runway views

Earning Miles:

  • Transfer partners: Amex Membership Rewards, Chase, Citi, Capital One
  • Star Alliance flights earn Miles & More
  • Co-branded credit cards available in Europe

Avoiding Fees:

  • Short-haul Economy Light is viable if you travel carry-on only
  • Watch the 8 kg carry-on limit—buy checked bag if uncertain
  • Pre-order food on short-haul to avoid higher onboard prices

Common Issues:

  • Economy Light has no flexibility—changes are expensive
  • Fuel surcharges on awards are significant
  • Short-haul WiFi for streaming only (no seatback screens)
  • Frankfurt is large—allow time for connections
