About

Transavia is a Dutch low-cost carrier and wholly-owned subsidiary of Air France-KLM, one of Europe's largest airline groups. Headquartered at Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam, Transavia operates as two divisions: Transavia Netherlands (code: HV) based in the Netherlands and Transavia France (code: TO) based at Paris Orly.

Founded in 1965 as Transavia Limburg, the airline has evolved from a regional charter carrier into a major European point-to-point low-cost airline. Transavia focuses primarily on leisure destinations around the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Morocco, and popular European city break routes. The airline carries approximately 16 million passengers annually across over 100 destinations.

While Transavia is not a formal alliance member, its integration with Air France-KLM provides valuable connectivity benefits. Passengers can earn and redeem Flying Blue miles on Transavia flights, making it an attractive option for Air France-KLM frequent flyers seeking budget-friendly leisure travel options.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Book directly on transavia.com for easier changes and customer service
  • Compare total cost including bags vs legacy carriers - sometimes barely cheaper
  • Midweek flights (Tue-Thu) typically cheapest
  • Book 6-8 weeks ahead for best prices on popular routes
  • Watch for sales around January and September

Saving Money:

  • Pack light: if you can fit everything in the personal item (40x30x20cm), you fly baggage-free
  • Add bags when booking - prices increase closer to departure
  • Consider Plus fare if you need a checked bag - often similar total price
  • Flying Blue Promo Rewards can offer excellent value for award redemptions
  • Share checked bag allowance if traveling with others on same booking

At the Airport:

  • Always check in online to avoid EUR 15 fee
  • AMS: Transavia uses departure halls 1 and 2
  • ORY: Transavia operates from Orly 1
  • Arrive 2 hours before short-haul flights, allow extra time in summer
  • Bag drop queues can be long during Dutch school holidays

Flying Blue Integration:

  • Link your Flying Blue number before flying
  • Book award flights early for school holiday periods
  • Combine with Air France/KLM miles for long-haul awards
  • Explorer members: no checked bag benefit, but miles add up

Common Pitfalls:

  • Cabin bag weight strictly enforced (10 kg combined limit)
  • No WiFi on most aircraft - download entertainment in advance
  • Airport extras are expensive - always book online
  • French division (TO) has slightly different policies - check carefully
  • Name changes cost EUR 50-75 and must match ID exactly

Destinations:

  • Best value: Off-peak Mediterranean (shoulder season)
  • Family favorites: Canary Islands have year-round sun
  • City breaks: Good prices to Barcelona, Lisbon, Nice
  • Morocco routes: Often cheaper than competitors
