About
SilkAir ceased operations on January 31, 2021, with all routes absorbed into Singapore Airlines (SQ). This guide provides historical information about the airline.
SilkAir was the regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, operating short and medium-haul routes throughout Asia-Pacific that the mainline carrier did not serve. The airline was positioned as a full-service carrier, maintaining the high service standards associated with the Singapore Airlines brand while focusing on secondary cities and leisure destinations.
Founded in 1989 as Tradewinds, the airline was rebranded as SilkAir in 1992. Operating from Singapore Changi Airport, SilkAir served over 50 destinations across Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, China, and Australia. At its peak, the airline carried approximately 4.7 million passengers annually.
As a Star Alliance affiliate (through Singapore Airlines), SilkAir passengers enjoyed seamless connections with the parent carrier and alliance partners. The airline was a full participant in the KrisFlyer frequent flyer program, allowing members to earn and redeem miles on SilkAir flights.
The merger into Singapore Airlines was announced in May 2018, with the integration accelerating during the COVID-19 pandemic as Singapore Airlines sought to simplify its fleet and operations. The final SilkAir-branded flight operated on January 31, 2021.
