Overview

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), pronounced roughly “soo-wan-na-poom,” is Bangkok's main international airport and a hub for Thai Airways. It now has two connected passenger buildings: the Main Terminal Building and the SAT-1 satellite concourse. Older guides that describe one terminal with an APM between concourses A and G are out of date.

You check in at the main terminal. If your flight uses SAT-1, follow the signs to the underground Automated People Mover (APM) after the relevant departure formalities. For a connection, use the transfer path shown for your arriving and departing flight rather than leaving the secure area on your own.

The main terminal is large and walking distances can be long. Check the live gate display before settling in; a SAT-1 gate adds an APM ride, while some remote stands add a bus trip.

Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Bangkok's other major airport, Don Mueang (DMK), is used by many low-cost and regional flights. Always search both airport codes, but compare schedules, baggage rules and the ground journey—not a blanket claim that one airport is cheaper.

Both airports now have rail. BKK has the Airport Rail Link; DMK has an SRT Red Line station, with the operator listing a connection from station exit 6 to the domestic terminal.

Changing between BKK and DMK is a surface airport transfer. Airports of Thailand provides a free shuttle for transfer passengers with proof of onward travel. At BKK it leaves from Level 2, Gate 3, and the airport currently lists service from 05:00 to 24:00 at about 30-minute intervals. Traffic can be severe. Plan to enter Thailand if required, collect any bag that is not checked through, make the road journey and meet the next airline's check-in cut-off; there is no responsible one-size-fits-all four-hour guarantee.

Connections & Transfers

Start with the signs for your connection type. Suvarnabhumi has distinct transfer procedures for international-to-international, international-to-domestic and domestic-to-international journeys. Transfer security applies on the relevant routes; do not assume every arriving passenger must clear Thai immigration, and do not assume a through passenger skips screening.

Main terminal and SAT-1

The APM links the Main Terminal Building with SAT-1 at basement level. If both flights use SAT-1, the airport provides transfer counters and security routes within the satellite. If your flights use different buildings, follow the signed APM transfer path. The APM is not a Concourse A–G shuttle.

Boarding passes and baggage

If you do not have the onward boarding pass, use the appropriate transfer counter before security. Confirm at origin whether baggage is checked to the final destination. On separate tickets or when the bag is not checked through, assume you will need the correct permission to enter Thailand, collect baggage and check in again unless the airlines explicitly confirm another arrangement.

For an international-to-domestic connection using the designated transfer process, follow the Transfer to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Samui signs and complete the airport's passport, customs and security steps. Other domestic destinations or separate-ticket arrangements may require the normal arrivals and recheck route.

Use the connection accepted by the ticketing airline rather than a generic table. The airport's own procedures require time for transfer desks, screening, the APM and reaching the gate; separate tickets need substantially more margin.

Transfer between BKK and DMK

The free inter-airport shuttle is only for transfer passengers who can show onward travel. At BKK, find it on Level 2 at Gate 3 on the inner curb. Check Airports of Thailand on the day for operating status, then budget for immigration, baggage, road traffic and the next check-in cut-off.

Getting In and Out

Use the Airport Rail Link when you want predictable travel to the BTS or MRT network; use a metered taxi or Grab when your destination is not convenient by rail or you have heavy luggage. Bangkok road times can change dramatically with traffic, so check the live estimate after landing.

Taxi & Rideshare

Grab is the primary rideshare app in Thailand. Uber exited the Thai market in 2018. Download the Grab app before arrival and link a payment method.

Grab pickup:

  • Designated pickup zones on Level 2 (Arrivals)
  • Follow signs to "Rideshare Pickup"
  • Typical fare to central Bangkok: ฿300-500 (US$9-15)

Metered Taxis:

Official airport taxis are available at designated taxi stands on Level 1:

  1. Take a queue ticket from the automated kiosk
  2. Wait for your number to be called
  3. The driver will start the meter
  4. Pay metered fare plus ฿50 airport surcharge plus expressway tolls

Typical fares to central Bangkok:

Destination Fare (excluding tolls)
Sukhumvit (Asok/Nana) ฿300-400 + ฿70 tolls
Silom/Sathorn ฿350-450 + ฿70 tolls
Khao San Road ฿400-500 + ฿70 tolls
Siam ฿300-400 + ฿70 tolls

Tips:

  • Always insist on the meter ("meter, ka/krap")
  • Expressway tolls are paid in cash by the passenger
  • Have small bills ready for tolls (฿25-75 per tollgate)
  • Keep your taxi queue receipt until journey ends

Public Transit

Airport Rail Link (ARL)

The Airport Rail Link station is on Level B1. Airports of Thailand currently lists service from 05:30 to 24:00; the last useful train for your connection may be earlier, so check the operator timetable on your date.

Take the train toward Phaya Thai for the BTS Skytrain connection. Makkasan connects with the MRT Blue Line via Phetchaburi station. Buy the correct fare product at the station; payment methods, fares and first/last trains can change, so use the operator's live information rather than an old step-by-step that promises contactless payment.

Buses

Public buses and vans serve several Bangkok and regional destinations from the airport transport area. Routes and stops change more often than the terminal layout; check the airport's current transport page or the operator journey planner instead of relying on old route 554/555 advice. For a flight transfer to DMK, use the dedicated transfer shuttle if you meet its proof-of-travel requirement.

Parking

Multi-level parking is available adjacent to the terminal:

Parking Area Rate Notes
Short Term (Zone A, B) ฿60/hour First 2 hours
Short Term ฿80/hour After 2 hours
Daily Maximum ฿720/day Zones A, B
Long Term (Zone C) ฿150/day Free shuttle to terminal
Long Term (Zone C) ฿120/day 7+ days

Pre-booking via the AOT Airports app or website can provide discounts for long-term parking.

Food

Suvarnabhumi offers a wide range of dining options across multiple levels:

Airside (After Security):

  • S&P Restaurant: Thai and international cuisine, multiple locations
  • MK Restaurants: Thai-style hot pot
  • Burger King, McDonald's, KFC: Fast food chains
  • Häagen-Dazs: Ice cream
  • Thai Taste Hub (Concourse G): Food court with Thai dishes

Landside (Level 3):

  • Black Canyon Coffee: Thai coffee chain
  • Chester's Grill: Thai-owned fast food

Level 4 (Departures):

  • Multiple cafes and restaurants before security

Best value: Magic Food Point on Level 3 offers genuine Thai food at local prices, a stark contrast to the expensive airside options. Try the pad thai, green curry, or tom yum soup.

WiFi

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal:

  • Network: "AirportTrueFreeWiFi" or "AirportAISFreeWiFi"
  • Registration: Mobile number verification via SMS
  • Quality: Variable; acceptable for email and browsing, inconsistent for streaming
  • Duration: 2-hour sessions, can reconnect

For better speeds, airline lounges offer premium WiFi. The airport also has ample power outlets near seating areas.

Local SIM

Thailand has excellent mobile connectivity. SIM cards are available immediately after exiting immigration:

Carriers available (kiosks in Arrivals hall):

  • AIS: Largest network, best coverage nationwide
  • TrueMove H: Strong in Bangkok, competitive pricing
  • DTAC: Budget-friendly options

Typical tourist SIM packages:

Package Data Validity Price
AIS Tourist SIM 15GB 8 days ฿299 (~US$9)
TrueMove H Unlimited 8 days ฿299 (~US$9)
DTAC Happy Tourist 15GB 8 days ฿299 (~US$9)
AIS Tourist SIM 30GB 15 days ฿599 (~US$17)

All major carriers have kiosks immediately outside the customs exit. Staff will install and activate the SIM for you. Bring your passport for registration.

Cash & ATMs

ATMs are plentiful throughout the airport, located in arrivals, departures, and airside:

Major banks with ATMs:

  • Bangkok Bank (purple)
  • Kasikorn Bank (green)
  • Siam Commercial Bank (purple)
  • Krungsri (yellow)

Important: Thai ATMs charge a ฿220 (~US$6) foreign card fee per withdrawal. This is in addition to any fees your home bank charges. To minimize fees:

  • Withdraw larger amounts less frequently
  • Consider using Wise or Revolut cards (some reimburse ATM fees)
  • The maximum withdrawal is typically ฿20,000-30,000 per transaction

Currency exchange:

  • Multiple exchange booths in arrivals (Level 2) and departures (Level 4)
  • SuperRich (orange) and SuperRich 1965 (green) offer competitive rates
  • Airport rates are 2-5% worse than city rates
  • For better rates, exchange at SuperRich branches in Bangkok (BTS Chit Lom or Central World)

Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB/฿). Approximate rate: US$1 = ฿35.
