Helsinki Airport Guide

Helsinki Airport (HEL) is Finland's main international airport and Finnair's home hub, north of central Helsinki. It operates as one terminal under one roof, not separate Terminals 1 and 2. The gate area is divided by border regime: gates 5–36 handle domestic and Schengen flights, while gates 37–55 handle long-haul and European non-Schengen flights.

All gates are reached on foot. Passengers moving between the Schengen and non-Schengen areas pass border control, and some arrivals must also complete transfer security depending on origin.

Follow Finavia's official transfer instructions: check the onward gate on the flight-information screens and walk directly toward it.

• Domestic and Schengen flights: gates 5–36.
• Long-haul and European non-Schengen flights: gates 37–55. Moving between these areas requires passport control.
• Transfer security: passengers arriving from many non-Schengen origins must be screened again. Finavia lists exceptions including EU countries outside Schengen, the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Singapore; follow signs and staff directions because eligibility depends on the arriving flight.
• Separate reservations: collect checked baggage, then complete check-in and security again. On one ticket, confirm through-checking with the airline.

There is no terminal shuttle or train between gates. Use the connection time stated by the airline rather than the former generic minimum-time and walking tables.

The airport train station is directly below the terminal and linked to both arrivals and departures by lifts and escalators. I and P trains serve central Helsinki in roughly 30 minutes; HSL trunk bus 600 is the main city bus. Long-distance travellers can connect at Tikkurila or Pasila, depending on the itinerary. Use live HSL and VR planners because maintenance can alter the Ring Rail Line.

Uber

Uber operates at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

• Pickup location: Follow current signs to the pre-booked taxi pickup area in the P2 parking hall
• Services available: Uber, UberXL
• Fares to city center: €35-50 depending on destination and demand
• Wait times: Usually 5-10 minutes

Taxi

The official taxi station is on the arrivals level. Finavia lists four contract operators and displays their prices at the rank; pre-booked taxis use the pickup area on the first floor of P2.

I and P airport trains

Both Ring Rail Line services connect the airport with Helsinki Central. The airport is in HSL zone C and central Helsinki is in zone A, so an ABC ticket is required. Buy before travel using the HSL app or a station ticket machine, or select the zones and pay at a contactless reader. Check the HSL Journey Planner for the next train and its route.

HSL says I and P services largely returned to their normal Ring Rail Line routes on 10 August 2026 after summer works, but passengers should still check live information.

Bus 600 and other buses

HSL trunk route 600 runs between the airport bus station on the arrivals level and Railway Square in central Helsinki. Other HSL and long-distance buses use the same airport bus station; use HSL or Matkahuolto to choose the current service for the destination.
