Introduction
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is Shanghai's main international airport and one of the busiest airports in China. Located approximately 30 km east of central Shanghai in the Pudong district, the airport handles over 70 million passengers annually and serves as the primary hub for China Eastern Airlines.
The airport has two main terminals plus a Satellite Hall:
- Terminal 1 (T1): The original terminal, handling a mix of domestic and international flights. Airlines include China Eastern (some flights), Air China, ANA, JAL, Cathay Pacific, and various SkyTeam partners.
- Terminal 2 (T2): The newer terminal serving primarily China Eastern Airlines, MU-coded flights, and Star Alliance partners. Opened in 2008 for the Shanghai Expo, T2 handles the majority of international traffic.
- Satellite Hall (S1/S2): Connected underground to both terminals via an Automated People Mover (APM). The Satellite Hall expanded capacity significantly and serves gates for both T1 and T2 passengers.
Critical note about Shanghai airports: Shanghai has a second major airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International (SHA), located much closer to the city center (13 km west). Hongqiao primarily serves domestic routes and some regional Asian destinations. Many domestic connections and all high-speed rail links depart from Hongqiao. Always verify which airport your flight uses.
Terminal layout:
- T1 and T2 are separate buildings, not connected airside
- Both terminals connect to the Satellite Hall via APM trains
- Within the Satellite Hall, S1 serves T1 passengers and S2 serves T2 passengers

Getting In and Out
Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located 30 km east of central Shanghai. Journey times vary based on traffic and transport method.
| Method | Time to City Center | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Maglev + Metro | 40-50 min total | ¥50-60 (~$7-8 USD) |
| Metro Line 2 | 60-75 min | ¥7-9 (~$1 USD) |
| Taxi | 45-90 min | ¥150-250 (~$20-35 USD) |
