Introduction

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is Australia's busiest airport, serving over 40 million passengers annually. Located in Mascot, approximately 8 km south of the Sydney CBD, it is the main gateway to Australia and a hub for Qantas.

The airport has three terminals:

  • Terminal 1 (T1): International terminal, handling all overseas flights. Located separately from the domestic terminals.
  • Terminal 2 (T2): Domestic terminal used by Virgin Australia, Rex (Regional Express), Jetstar, and other domestic carriers.
  • Terminal 3 (T3): Domestic terminal and Qantas hub, handling Qantas and QantasLink domestic flights.

Important layout note: T2 and T3 are connected by a short indoor walkway (both landside and airside). T1 is a separate building and not connected airside to the domestic terminals. Transfers between T1 and T2/T3 require a bus or train.

Getting In and Out

Sydney Airport is 8 km south of the Sydney CBD. Travel times to popular areas:

  • Sydney CBD (Circular Quay, Town Hall): 20-35 minutes
  • Bondi Beach: 25-40 minutes
  • Manly: 45-60 minutes (via CBD)
  • Parramatta: 35-50 minutes

Transport options include train (Airport Link), taxi, rideshare (Uber, Ola, DiDi), and bus. The train is fastest but notably expensive due to a station access fee. Taxis and rideshare offer door-to-door convenience.

Taxi & Rideshare

Uber, Ola, DiDi, and 13cabs (app-based taxi) all operate at Sydney Airport.

Rideshare pickup points:

  • T1: Priority pickup area on arrivals level (follow signs to rideshare)
  • T2/T3: Designated pickup zone on arrivals level

Typical fares to common destinations:

Destination Uber/Rideshare Taxi
Sydney CBD A$35-55 A$45-65
Bondi Beach A$40-55 A$50-65
Darling Harbour A$35-50 A$45-60
Parramatta A$55-75 A$65-90

Taxi ranks are located outside the arrivals halls at all terminals. Taxis are metered with an A$4.50 airport surcharge. Credit cards accepted.

Peak hour note: Traffic on the M5 and around the airport can be heavy during morning (7-9am) and evening (4-7pm) rush hours. Journey times can double.

Public Transit

Airport Link Train

The Airport Link is the fastest way to reach the city center, but it comes with a significant "station access fee" that makes it one of the most expensive airport trains in the world.

Route: International (T1) → Domestic (T2/T3) → Mascot → Green Square → Central → Town Hall → Wynyard → Circular Quay

Fare to Central Station:

  • Adult: A$18.70 (includes ~A$15 station access fee)
  • Child: A$16.60
  • Off-peak discount: Not applicable to airport stations

Journey time: 13 minutes from T1 to Central Station

Frequency: Every 10 minutes (peak), every 15 minutes (off-peak)

Hours: First train around 5am, last train around midnight (check timetables)

Payment: Opal card, contactless credit/debit card, or single trip ticket

To use the train:

  1. Follow signs to "Trains" at any terminal
  2. Tap on with Opal card or contactless card at the gate
  3. Board the T8 Airport Line (any city-bound train)
  4. Tap off at your destination

Money-saving tip: The station access fee only applies to the airport stations. If you're willing to walk 15-20 minutes, you can exit at Mascot station (A$4-5 fare to Central) rather than the airport stations. Some travelers take the T-Bus between terminals and walk to Mascot.

Bus Route 400

The 400 bus is a budget alternative, running between Bondi Junction and Burwood via the airport:

  • Fare: A$3-5 (standard Opal bus fare, no station access fee)
  • Frequency: Every 10-20 minutes
  • Journey time: 40-50 minutes to Central (via connecting services)

The bus stops at T1, T2/T3, and Mascot station. It's much cheaper but significantly slower than the train.

Parking

Sydney Airport offers multiple parking options:

Terminal parking (short-term):

  • P1 (T1 International): From A$15/hour, A$60/day

Off-site alternatives:

For regional travel beyond Sydney, Telstra offers the best coverage. For Sydney-only visits, all three carriers provide excellent service.

Cash & ATMs

ATMs are located throughout all terminals:

  • Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac, NAB: Major Australian banks
  • ATMs available before and after immigration in T1
