Cairo Airport Guide

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is Cairo's main airport and EgyptAir's principal hub. The passenger complex is in Heliopolis, northeast of central Cairo.

CAI has three passenger terminals. Airline assignments are mixed and can change, so use the terminal shown on your boarding pass and confirm it in the airport's airline directory:

• Terminal 1 is a separate terminal area used by a range of regional and international airlines.

Key fact: CAI's official people-mover information says the free train serves Terminals 1, 2, and 3, with separate airside and landside use. Do not assume that every itinerary can stay airside: confirm the transfer process with the operating airline before travel.

Terminal Layout

• Terminal 1 is physically separate from the Terminal 2/3 area.
• Terminals 2 and 3 are adjacent, but check the signs and airline instructions rather than assuming a particular walkway is available for your journey.
• The Automated People Mover connects the three terminals and intermediate airport stops. The airport says the terminal-to-terminal journey is no more than five minutes, but also publishes a daily maintenance window; waiting and formalities can add substantially more time.

EgyptAir Connections

For a protected EgyptAir or interline connection:

1. Follow "Transfer" or "Connections" signs after deplaning
2. Pass through transfer security screening
3. Check departure screens for your gate
4. Follow the signed route to the departure terminal and gate

The airline's ticketing system applies the official minimum connection time to a through itinerary. For separate tickets, leave a much larger buffer because you may need to enter Egypt, collect baggage, travel landside, check in again, and clear departure controls.

Immigration for Connecting Passengers

Passengers whom the airline keeps in the international transit route normally follow transfer signs rather than entering arrivals. If your bags are not checked through, your onward flight uses a landside transfer, or you connect to a domestic flight, expect immigration, baggage, customs, check-in, and security formalities. Check entry eligibility through Egypt's official e-Visa portal before relying on a landside transfer.

CAI is in Heliopolis, northeast of central Cairo. Road journey times vary sharply with congestion, so leave a generous buffer when returning for a flight.

The airport's official ground-transport guide lists metered white taxis, fixed-destination limousine services, rental cars, and public buses. There is no direct airport metro station listed; for most first-time visitors or travelers with luggage, a prearranged car or official taxi is the simplest option.

Uber and Careem (regional rideshare service) are both available and widely used at CAI. These offer the most reliable and transparent pricing.

Limousine Services

Pre-booked airport limousines are available through hotels and tour operators. Expect to pay E£400-800 (~$13-26 USD) to downtown Cairo. This option offers fixed pricing and air-conditioned vehicles.

The airport confirms city buses and intercity/governorate coaches from the bus station in the parking area in front of Terminal 1. It does not publish dependable route, fare, or frequency details on that page, so check the information desk on arrival rather than planning around an old route number.

If you arrive at Terminal 2 or 3, follow signs for the free Automated People Mover toward Terminal 1 and the parking area, subject to the train's operating hours. Buses are the lowest-cost option, but a taxi or prearranged car is usually easier with luggage or a late arrival.

Free WiFi is available throughout the airport:
