Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Guide

DFW's five terminals look spread out on the map, but the connection routine is simple: stay after security and take Skylink in the direction shown for your gate. The free train links Terminals A, B, C, D, and E in both directions.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport sits between Dallas and Fort Worth and is American Airlines' largest hub. Airlines and gates can move between terminals, so use the terminal letter in your current flight record rather than an old carrier list. Terminal D contains the main international-arrivals facility and the Grand Hyatt DFW.

Outside security, the orange Terminal Link shuttles connect all terminals. For regional rail, Terminal A has the DART Orange Line, while Terminal B has TEXRail and the newer DART Silver Line.

Direct answer: all five terminals connect after security on Skylink. Check the new gate before boarding and use the platform for the shorter direction around the loop.

Skylink Train

The Skylink is a free automated people mover that connects all five terminals:

• Operates: 24 hours a day, subject to maintenance advisories
• Frequency: Every 2 minutes
• Stations: 2 per terminal (10 total)
• Location: Airside (after security), upper level of each terminal

The train runs in both directions (clockwise and counterclockwise), so you can choose the shorter route to your destination.

DFW publishes an average Skylink ride of about five minutes and a maximum of about nine minutes between its farthest points. That is train time, not gate-to-gate time: include the walk to an elevated station, the wait, and the walk from the destination station.

How much connection time to allow at DFW

The airline's booking system determines the applicable minimum for your flights. Our preference is at least 75 minutes for a domestic terminal change and two and a half hours or more after a non-precleared international arrival. Add more for separate tickets, a bag that is not checked through, or mobility assistance.

International Arrivals (Terminal D)

If arriving on an international flight and connecting to domestic:

1. Exit plane at Terminal D
2. Clear immigration at the Federal Inspection Services facility
3. Collect checked bags and clear customs
4. Re-check bags at the transfer desk
5. Re-clear security and proceed to your departure gate via Skylink

Do not assume an international-to-international itinerary stays airside. Follow the airline and CBP instructions for your exact route; unless they explicitly provide a different process, plan for U.S. entry formalities and TSA screening.

Landside Connections (Terminal Link)

If you need to travel between terminals outside security, use the orange Terminal Link shuttle. DFW currently publishes arrivals every 8 to 10 minutes after 5 a.m.; overnight passengers call the number shown at the stop for pickup. The ride itself can take 10 to 20 minutes depending on the destination.

DFW is located roughly equidistant between Dallas and Fort Worth:

• Downtown Dallas: 18 miles east, 30-45 minutes (traffic dependent)
• Downtown Fort Worth: 18 miles west, 30-45 minutes
• Grapevine/Southlake: 5-10 miles, 10-20 minutes
• Arlington: 12 miles south, 20-30 minutes

DFW has three direct terminal rail services:

• DART Orange Line from Terminal A to Irving and downtown Dallas
• DART Silver Line from Terminal B to northern Dallas-area destinations and Plano
• TEXRail from Terminal B to Grapevine and downtown Fort Worth

Uber and Lyft are readily available at DFW. Pickup is on the Arrivals level (lower level) outside baggage claim at each terminal.

How to get picked up:

1. Exit to the Arrivals curb and look for "Passenger Pickup" signs
2. Request your ride in the app
3. Message your driver with your door number (marked on pillars outside each exit)

Fares are dynamic and can rise during busy periods. Compare the live app quote before committing.

Taxis: Available at the same Arrivals curb locations. Metered fares are similar to rideshare prices for most destinations.

DART Orange Line (downtown Dallas)

The DART Orange Line connects DFW to downtown Dallas and points east.

Station location: Terminal A, lower level (follow signs to "DART Station")

To Downtown Dallas:

1. Walk or take Skylink to Terminal A
2. Exit security and follow signs to DART Rail
3. Board any train marked "Downtown Dallas" or "Parker Road"
4. Ride to West End Station or other downtown stops
5. Allow roughly an hour, then check the live schedule for your actual departure

From West End Station, you can transfer to the Red, Blue, or Green lines to reach other Dallas destinations.

DART Silver Line (Addison, Richardson, and Plano)

The Silver Line opened on October 25, 2025 and serves DFW Airport Terminal B near Entry B43. It runs through Cypress Waters, Downtown Carrollton, Addison, UT Dallas, Richardson, and Plano. It does not serve downtown Dallas; use the Orange Line for that trip.

Terminal B also serves TEXRail, so check the train branding and destination before boarding. A covered walkway connects the Terminal A and Terminal B rail stations.

TEXRail (downtown Fort Worth)

TEXRail connects DFW to downtown Fort Worth and the Stockyards.

Station location: Terminal B, lower level (entry via door B30)

To Downtown Fort Worth:

1. Walk or take Skylink to Terminal B
2. Exit security and follow signs to TEXRail
3. Board the train toward "T&P Station"
4. Allow about an hour to downtown Fort Worth and check the live TEXRail schedule

Late night: Most restaurants close by 9-10 PM. The 24-hour Chick-fil-A (Terminal A, Monday-Saturday) and 24/7 Raising Cane's (Terminal B, gate B19) are exceptions. Look for Farmer's Fridge vending machines for fresh salads.

DFW offers free WiFi throughout all terminals, provided by AT&T.

Major carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) have prepaid options. Typical tourist SIM packages run $30-50 for 30 days with data.

For better prices, consider ordering in advance from Amazon or picking up a SIM at a carrier store in Dallas or Fort Worth after arrival.

ATMs are located throughout all terminals, typically near restrooms and food courts. Major banks represented include Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo.

Out-of-network fees typically run $3-5 per transaction. For better rates, use your bank's ATM network or withdraw cash at a bank branch in the city.

Currency exchange: Travelex operates locations in Terminal D (international arrivals) and other terminals. Airport exchange rates include significant markups - using a debit card abroad or services like Wise typically offers better value.

DFW offers extensive retail options across all terminals.

Duty-Free: Available in Terminal D for international departures. Dufry operates the main duty-free shops with liquor, cosmetics, and luxury goods.
