About
DEFUNCT AIRLINE: US Airways ceased operations on October 17, 2015, following its merger with American Airlines. This guide provides historical information. For current travel, refer to American Airlines.
US Airways was a major American airline headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. At the time of its merger with American Airlines, it was the fifth-largest airline in the United States by passenger traffic and operated over 3,000 daily flights to more than 200 destinations.
The airline's history traced back to 1937 when it began as All American Aviation, a mail carrier in Pennsylvania. It evolved through several names—Allegheny Airlines (1953), USAir (1979), and finally US Airways (1997)—before merging with America West Airlines in 2005 and ultimately with American Airlines in 2013.
US Airways was a Star Alliance member from 2004 until the merger, after which the combined airline joined Oneworld. The merger with American Airlines, announced in February 2013 and completed in December 2013, created the world's largest airline at the time. Full operational integration was completed on October 17, 2015, when the last US Airways flight operated.
