Istanbul Airport Guide

Istanbul Airport is Turkish Airlines' main hub and a huge connecting airport northwest of the city. Its passenger complex contains domestic and international areas under one very large roof, but that does not make every transfer a simple airside walk. Your ticket, airlines, baggage, and domestic/international direction determine whether passport control or baggage collection is required.

Gate walks can be long, so check the screens as soon as your gate appears and follow the signed transfer route rather than guessing from a concourse letter. For the city, the M11 metro now runs through the airport between Gayrettepe and Halkalı; Havaist coaches remain useful for destinations not convenient to the rail network.

Istanbul also has Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. IST and SAW are different airports separated by a long cross-city journey, so verify the three-letter code on every segment.

Start by confirming that both flights are at IST and whether they are on one protected ticket. Then follow the International Transfer or Domestic Transfer signs and check the operating airline's instructions for baggage. The terminal is physically integrated, but border and security steps still separate some passenger flows.

Do not use an airport-wide minimum connection time from a generic table. A connection sold on one ticket has airline-specific rules; separate tickets need enough time for any entry formalities, baggage collection, check-in cutoff, security, and the walk to the gate.

Turkish Airlines Connections

For a Turkish Airlines or eligible partner itinerary on one ticket, follow the transfer signs after leaving the aircraft. If your onward boarding pass was not issued at origin, use the transit check-in counter. Turkish Airlines says eligible international-to-international transfer passengers proceed to the next gate without passport formalities; different-ticket and non-partner itineraries can require other steps.

Immigration for Connecting Passengers

Eligible international-to-international passengers on a single ticket normally remain in transit. Domestic-to-international passengers proceed toward the international area and passport control; international-to-domestic passengers proceed through passport control toward the domestic area. Baggage handling differs for protected through itineraries and separate or non-partner tickets, so confirm it at check-in.

If your connection requires entering Türkiye, check the official visa rules for your nationality before travel. Do not rely on a generic list of passports or assume a visa on arrival is available.

IST is northwest of central Istanbul. The M11 is the predictable choice when your destination connects well to the rail network. Havaist coaches can be easier for a direct named district stop, while a licensed taxi is the least complicated door-to-door option with heavy luggage. Road journeys can change dramatically with traffic.

Use the signed official taxi rank outside Arrivals and ignore unsolicited drivers inside the terminal. App availability and payment methods can change, so confirm the current fare and payment terms at the rank or in the licensed-taxi app before departure. Keep your destination written down and allow for tolls and traffic.

Metro M11 Line

The M11 now runs through Istanbul Airport between Gayrettepe and Halkalı, following completion of the last section in June 2026. This gives you two directions from the airport, so check the platform display before boarding.

How to reach central Istanbul via Metro:

1. Follow signs to "Metro" in the arrivals hall
2. Buy or load the currently accepted transit payment at the station machines
3. For Taksim and much of central Beyoğlu, take M11 toward Gayrettepe and transfer to M2
4. At Gayrettepe, transfer to M2 metro line
5. For western districts or a Halkalı connection, use the opposite M11 direction

Operating hours and fares change. Check the station information or official journey planner for the day you travel, especially for an early flight.

HAVAIST Airport Buses

Havaist operates luggage-friendly coaches between IST and multiple parts of Istanbul. The official site places the airport boarding area on Arrivals level -2 and provides current stops, departure times, fares, and ticket purchase. Route names and prices change, so choose your destination in its live route finder rather than relying on an old numbered-route table.

The direct Sultanahmet service returned with a revised route in May 2026. Check its current stops before using it for the Old City, because not every hotel is close to the coach stop.

Getting to Sabiha Gokcen (SAW)

An IST–SAW transfer is a cross-city ground journey, not an airport connection. Check Havaist's live route finder for a current coach option, or use a licensed taxi/private transfer. Build the plan around your airlines' check-in deadlines and a large traffic buffer; there is no honest universal minimum for separate tickets.
