Introduction

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) is Africa's busiest airport by passenger traffic and the primary hub for Ethiopian Airlines, the continent's largest carrier. Located 6 km southeast of Addis Ababa city center, the airport serves as the gateway to Ethiopia and a major connection point for travel across Africa, with Ethiopian Airlines operating routes to over 130 destinations worldwide as a Star Alliance member.

The airport has two terminals:

  • Terminal 1 (Domestic): Serves domestic and some regional flights. Recently expanded to 25,750 m² with 4 contact gates and 10 remote gates. Houses 22 check-in counters, self-check-in kiosks, and the ShebaMiles Silver Lounge.
  • Terminal 2 (International): Handles all international flights. Opened in 2019, built by China Communications Construction Company. Features modern facilities, the Cloud Nine and Sheba Platinum lounges, and the in-terminal Skylight Hotel.

Important: Terminals are not connected airside. Transfer between terminals requires exiting to the landside area and walking approximately 300 meters or taking a free shuttle bus.

Ethiopian Airlines operates a hub-and-spoke model with tightly scheduled connection banks, making ADD one of the most efficient African transit points. Most long-haul flights arrive and depart in concentrated windows (6-10 PM and 2-5 AM), which can make lounges crowded during these periods.

Getting In and Out

ADD is located 6 km southeast of Addis Ababa city center, approximately 20-30 minutes by car depending on traffic.

  • Bole neighborhood: 5-10 min
  • City center (Piazza): 20-30 min
  • Meskel Square: 15-25 min
  • Merkato: 30-40 min

Traffic congestion can significantly extend travel times, especially during morning and evening rush hours. Addis Ababa has no rail connection to the airport, so taxis and rideshare are the primary options.

Taxi & Rideshare

Uber does not operate in Ethiopia. Instead, several local rideshare apps serve Addis Ababa:

Rideshare Apps

App Starting Fare Notes
RIDE ETB 100-120 + ~20/km Largest fleet (30,000+ vehicles), 24/7, no surge pricing
ZayRide Metered On-demand, licensed drivers, built-in meter
ETTA Metered Call center available at 8707

Tip: Download apps before arrival as airport WiFi can be slow. You need a local SIM card or working data to use these apps.

Taxis

Two types of taxis operate at ADD:

  • Yellow NTO Taxis: Government-operated, fixed fares. Recommended for visitors without local apps. ETB 500-1,000 (~$3.50-7 USD) to city center.
  • Blue and White Private Taxis: Negotiate fare before departure. Can overcharge tourists significantly - some charge 10x the normal rate.

Important: Most taxis only accept cash (Ethiopian Birr). ATMs and currency exchange are available in the arrivals hall.

Typical Fares to City Center

Destination Taxi (ETB) USD Equivalent
Bole area 300-500 $2-3.50
City center 500-1,000 $3.50-7
Merkato 800-1,200 $5.50-8.50

Public Transit

Addis Ababa has no direct rail or metro connection to the airport. The city's light rail system does not extend to Bole Airport.

Minibuses

Local minibuses are the cheapest option (around ETB 15-20, ~$0.10-0.15 USD) but are not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with the city. There is no direct minibus stop at the airport - you must walk to the main road.

Hotel Shuttles

Many hotels in the Bole area offer free airport shuttles. Confirm with your hotel before arrival.

Private Transfers

Pre-arranged transfers through hotels or tour operators cost ETB 1,500-3,000 (~$10-20 USD) and are recommended for first-time visitors, especially for late-night arrivals.

Parking

ADD offers short-term and long-term parking directly opposite the terminal buildings.

On-Site Parking

Type Location Best For
Short-term Adjacent to terminals Pick-up/drop-off, hourly stays
Long-term Slightly further Extended trips

Off-Site Parking

Private parking facilities near the airport offer daily rates from approximately $3-5 USD per day for extended stays. Security features include surveillance cameras and gated entrances.

Note: Specific official rates are not publicly listed. Contact Ethiopian Airports Enterprise for current pricing.

Food

Dining options are limited in the public areas. Most restaurants are located airside in Terminal 2 after security.

Terminal 2 (International - Airside)

  • Burger King: Fast food, familiar menu
  • Pizza Hut: Pizza and pasta
  • Cafes: Coffee and light snacks near gates
  • Traditional Ethiopian: Injera and local dishes available

Important Notes

  • No restaurants in the public/landside area of the terminal
  • Gates A14-A19 have no food services - eat before proceeding to these gates
  • Prices are significantly higher than in the city (reportedly 3x or more)
  • Ethiopian coffee is excellent - try a traditional coffee at one of the cafes

For Long Layovers

The Ethiopian Skylight Hotel restaurants (5-minute walk from airport) offer better variety including Ethiopian, Italian, Arabian, and Asian cuisine at more reasonable prices.

WiFi

Free WiFi is available throughout both terminals. Connect to "Ethiopian_Airports" network.

  • Cost: Free
  • Speed: Variable, adequate for browsing and email
  • Reliability: Can be slow during peak periods

Lounges offer faster, more reliable connectivity. For guaranteed connectivity, purchase a local SIM card with data.

SIM cards are available from two providers at the airport:

Ethio Telecom

The dominant carrier with nationwide coverage. Store in arrivals hall open 24 hours.

Item Price (ETB) USD

Cash & ATMs

Ethiopia uses the Ethiopian Birr (ETB). As of January 2026, the exchange rate is approximately ETB 140-155 = $1 USD following the 2024 currency liberalization.

ATMs

ATMs are available in the arrivals hall, operated by:

  • Dashen Bank: Best network for international cards
  • Commercial Bank of Ethiopia
  • Other private banks

ATM Tips:

  • Most ATMs accept Visa cards
  • MasterCard acceptance is more limited
  • American Express has very limited acceptance
  • Typical withdrawal limit: ETB 4,000-5,000 per transaction (~$30-35 USD)
  • Maximum 2-3 transactions per day

Currency Exchange

Exchange offices in the arrivals hall are open 24/7. Airport rates include unfavorable markups - use ATMs for better rates.

Declarations

If carrying more than $3,000 USD (or equivalent) in cash, you must declare it using the foreign currency customs declaration form on arrival.

Important: Ethiopia is largely a cash economy. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and some restaurants, but carry Birr for most transactions.
