Overview

Hamburg Airport (HAM), officially Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt, is the principal airport serving Hamburg and northern Germany. It is north of the city centre.

The passenger complex has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, joined by the Airport Plaza. Hamburg Airport places the central security checkpoint between both terminals on Plaza Level 1, so either terminal's check-in area can feed the same central screening route. Airline and check-in assignments can change; confirm the terminal in the official airline directory and on the day's flight display rather than relying on a fixed carrier list.

Connections & Transfers

Key fact: Terminal 1, the Airport Plaza, and Terminal 2 form one adjoining complex. That does not mean every itinerary is a sterile airside transfer: passport control, baggage collection, customs, or a new check-in can send a passenger landside.

Terminal Layout

  • Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: check-in and arrivals areas on either side of the Airport Plaza
  • Airport Plaza: central circulation and the shared security checkpoint on Level 1
  • Departure areas: follow the flight display and signs for the assigned gate; Schengen status determines whether passport control is part of the route

The operating airline decides whether bags are through-checked and whether a connection is protected. Use the minimum connection shown by the airline for the exact itinerary; Hamburg Airport does not publish one generic minimum that safely applies to every combination.

Connection Tips

  • Check the onward gate on the airport displays; a terminal number alone does not identify the full walking route.
  • A Schengen/non-Schengen transfer can involve passport control.
  • If the airline instructs you to collect bags, or if the flights are separately ticketed, allow time to enter Germany if eligible, reclaim baggage, return to departures, check in, and clear security again.
  • Follow the airport's live security and operational information on the day of travel.

Getting In and Out

Hamburg Airport has its own Hamburg Airport (Flughafen) S-Bahn station, reached directly from the arrivals levels of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The airport's transport page lists S1 service to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof about every 10 minutes, with a scheduled journey of about 25 minutes. Taxis, app-based rides, local buses, and rental cars are also available; road times vary with traffic.

Taxi & Rideshare

Taxi

Licensed taxis queue outside the arrivals area of both terminals. Hamburg taxis are typically cream/beige colored.

Destination Fare Time
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof €25-35 20-30 min
Hamburg Altstadt (City Center) €25-35 20-30 min
Speicherstadt/HafenCity €30-40 25-35 min
St. Pauli/Reeperbahn €25-35 20-30 min
Hamburg Messe €20-30 15-25 min
Lübeck €90-120 60-75 min

Fares are metered with a base fare of approximately €4 plus €2.50-3 per kilometer. Night surcharges (22:00-06:00) add approximately 20%. No surcharges for luggage.

Uber

Uber operates at Hamburg Airport with pickup at designated areas.

  • Pickup location: Follow signs to rideshare pickup zones in the arrivals area
  • Services available: UberX, Uber Green
  • Typical fare to city center: €20-30
  • Advance booking: Reserve through the app up to 30 days ahead

Alternatives: FREE NOW (formerly mytaxi) and Bolt also operate in Hamburg with similar pricing.

Public Transit

S-Bahn (Suburban Rail)

The S1 links the airport directly with Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and central stops including Jungfernstieg. Follow the S-Bahn signs from either terminal's arrivals level and check the destination display before boarding.

Fares, engineering work, and first/last trains change. Plan the exact trip and buy the required ticket through HVV or an official ticket machine rather than relying on a static fare table.

Night Bus (Nachtbus)

Hamburg Airport lists night bus 606 toward Rathausmarkt, with stops including Hauptbahnhof. Daytime airport bus stops are outside Terminal 1 on Level 0; the airport currently lists routes 274, 292, and X95 as well. Check the live HVV planner because routes and operating windows can change.

Hamburg Airport offers over 12,000 parking spaces across multiple facilities.
