Detroit Airport Guide

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) serves southeast Michigan from Romulus, southwest of central Detroit. It has two separate passenger buildings: McNamara Terminal and Evans Terminal (formerly North Terminal). Use the airport's live airline or flight information to confirm which one you need before travelling to DTW.

McNamara contains Concourses A, B, and C. The ExpressTram runs along Concourse A only; at its terminal station, signs lead to the pedestrian tunnel for Concourses B and C. Evans has one connected concourse. There is no airside link between McNamara and Evans.

Follow the airport's transfer-between-gates instructions and the yellow connection signs.

Within McNamara Terminal

• The three stations of the ExpressTram are all on Concourse A: terminal centre, south, and north.
• The terminal-centre station serves the check-in, baggage claim, ground transportation, and the tunnel leading to Concourses B and C.
• Concourses B and C are reached on foot through that tunnel; the tram does not travel to them.

Within Evans Terminal

Evans is a separate terminal with a single connected concourse. Confirm the current gate on the flight displays rather than relying on a fixed airline or gate allocation.

Between McNamara and Evans

There is no airside connection. Exit the secure area, follow signs to the Ground Transportation Center, and take the airport's terminal shuttle. The airport says it runs approximately every ten minutes and also stops at the Westin hotel. After changing terminals, go through security again.

Connection formalities

Passport control, baggage collection or re-check, and security requirements depend on origin, baggage arrangements, and the ticket. Follow the airline's instructions; on separate tickets, confirm whether bags must be collected and checked again. Because an inter-terminal change is landside, do not use a generic minimum-connection table—allow for the shuttle and a new security screening, and follow the airline's connection time.

DTW has no passenger-rail station. For central Detroit, compare the direct DAX coach with SMART buses; for Ann Arbor or East Lansing, check Michigan Flyer. Taxis, app-based rides, rental cars, and public-transport stops are signed from each terminal's Ground Transportation Center. Road times vary with traffic, so use live routing for a time-sensitive trip.

Uber and Lyft are widely available at DTW. Rideshare pickup locations:

McNamara Terminal: Ground level at the Ground Transportation Center. Exit baggage claim, proceed downstairs, and follow signs to "Rideshare/App-Based Rides."

Evans Terminal: Ground level at the Ground Transportation Center (follow signs from baggage claim).

• DAX (Detroit Air Xpress): direct coach between both DTW terminals and downtown Detroit. Buy ahead when possible and check the live schedule.
• SMART: Route 125 serves both terminals; Route 280 serves Evans Terminal; FAST Route 261 serves both terminals. Use SMART's trip planner for the current stop pattern and timetable.
• Michigan Flyer: scheduled coach service from both terminals to Ann Arbor, Whitmore Lake, and East Lansing. Check the operator for reservations and the current timetable.

There is no direct train from either terminal. For any bus or coach, confirm the pickup point on the airport page before leaving baggage claim.
