Tokyo Airport Guide

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), officially Tokyo International Airport, is the closer of Tokyo's two major airports to the city center. If your trip starts in central Tokyo, that location is HND's practical advantage: the airport has direct rail links to Shinagawa and Hamamatsucho, and the airport estimates about 30 minutes to Tokyo Station with a transfer.

HND has three terminals, and the terminal on your booking matters:

• Terminal 1: Domestic flights, including Japan Airlines, Skymark, StarFlyer, and Japan Transocean Air
• Terminal 2: ANA, AIRDO, and Solaseed Air domestic flights, plus ANA international flights
• Terminal 3: International flights operated by many other airlines

The catch: international flights use both Terminals 2 and 3, so “international terminal” is not enough information. Check the terminal shown by your airline before you set out. Landside, you can move between terminals by free shuttle bus; the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail also stop at the airport terminals. Terminals 1 and 2 additionally have an approximately 400-meter underground connection.

Start with your arrival and departure terminals, then follow the transfer route published for that exact combination. HND has controlled-area transfer buses for some eligible connections, while other itineraries require you to enter Japan and move landside. Your airline decides whether checked bags can be transferred, so do not assume that a through ticket and a self-transfer follow the same process.

How to move between Haneda terminals landside

• Free shuttle bus: Serves all three terminals from the arrival level. This is the simplest no-ticket option, but it uses airport roads and is not an unrestricted all-night service. Check the airport's live timetable if you have a very early or late connection.
• Keikyu Line or Tokyo Monorail: Both can move you between the airport terminals. Eligible passengers connecting between domestic and international flights—or between international flights—can request a free transit boarding ticket at an airport information counter. Bring your passport and boarding pass.
• Terminals 1 and 2 on foot: An approximately 400-meter underground passage connects the two domestic terminals. Follow current airport signs because construction can affect the moving walkway.

Watch out for Terminal 3: you cannot walk from Terminal 3 to Terminals 1 or 2. Use the shuttle, railway, monorail, or the controlled transfer route provided for your itinerary.

International connections

For an international-to-international connection, follow the signs for your departure terminal before entering the arrivals route. Haneda provides controlled transfer buses between Terminals 2 and 3 for eligible passengers. If the airline instead instructs you to enter Japan, you will need to complete arrival formalities and clear departure security again.

For an international-to-domestic connection, expect immigration, baggage instructions, customs, and domestic security to be part of the process. Depending on the airline and terminal, a domestic transfer counter and controlled transfer bus may be available. Confirm baggage handling and the airline's minimum connection time before booking; HND's official guidance deliberately sends those questions to the operating airline.

Best for most arrivals: take the Keikyu Line if Shinagawa or the Toei Asakusa Line is convenient for your destination; take the Tokyo Monorail if Hamamatsucho and the JR Yamanote Line make the cleaner transfer.

Haneda Airport's current route guide estimates about 15 minutes to Shinagawa, 20 minutes to Hamamatsucho, and 30 minutes to Tokyo Station. It also estimates about 40 minutes to Asakusa and 45–50 minutes to Shibuya or Shinjuku. These are planning estimates rather than guaranteed journey times, so check a live route planner before departure.

Keikyu and Tokyo Monorail stations are directly connected to all three terminals. In Terminals 1 and 2, the railway ticket gates are on B1. Terminal 3 has separate access points around the arrival and departure levels; follow the signs for the operator you want.

Taxi

Licensed taxis queue outside all terminal exits. Tokyo taxis are metered and accept credit cards.

Fixed-rate taxis are available to major destinations if you use the expressway. Night surcharge (20%) applies between 22:00-05:30.

Tip: Taxis in Tokyo are expensive compared to trains. Public transit is faster during rush hour and significantly cheaper.

Rideshare

Uber and other rideshare services operate at Haneda, though availability is more limited than in Western countries. Fares are similar to regular taxis. Pickup locations are at designated rideshare areas outside arrivals.

Note: Japan Taxi app is widely used for booking taxis and often provides better availability than Uber.

Keikyu Line: best for Shinagawa and the Asakusa Line

Keikyu is the direct rail option for Shinagawa and Yokohama. Some services continue onto the Toei Asakusa Line, which can remove a transfer for destinations such as Asakusa. Check the train display before boarding because stopping patterns and through-service destinations vary.

Tokyo Monorail: best for Hamamatsucho and JR connections

Tokyo Monorail runs from all three terminals to Hamamatsucho, where you can transfer to the JR Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines. The operator lists a fastest journey of 13 minutes between Terminal 3 and Hamamatsucho; Terminals 1 and 2 take a few minutes longer. Trains average about five minutes apart, but use the live timetable for first and last services.

Airport buses: best for a direct hotel or district stop

Airport and route buses serve major stations, hotels, and districts across Tokyo and neighboring prefectures. A bus can spare you a rail transfer with luggage, but road traffic makes its arrival time less predictable. Search the destination on Haneda Airport's official bus page before buying a ticket rather than relying on an old route number or fare.

Haneda Airport has dedicated parking facilities for each terminal.

Currency Exchange

• Many stores now accept credit cards and IC cards (Suica, Pasmo)

Tip: Always choose "Japanese Yen" when the ATM asks which currency to use for conversion. This ensures your home bank handles the exchange at better rates.
