Introduction
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is Rwanda's main international airport, located in the Kanombe district approximately 10 km east of Kigali city center. The airport serves as the hub for RwandAir, Rwanda's national carrier, and handles all commercial passenger traffic in the country. For most travelers, KGL is the gateway to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, safari in Akagera National Park, and the country's growing conference tourism sector.
The airport operates from a single terminal that was modernized in 2016. The terminal is compact and easy to navigate, with domestic and international departures handled from the same building. The layout is straightforward: arrivals on the ground floor, departures on the upper level, with check-in counters, security, immigration, and gates all within a short walk of each other.
Key airlines serving KGL:
- RwandAir (hub): Extensive African network plus routes to London, Brussels, Dubai, Mumbai, and Guangzhou
- Ethiopian Airlines: Daily connections via Addis Ababa
- Kenya Airways: Multiple daily flights to Nairobi
- Turkish Airlines: Daily service to Istanbul
- Qatar Airways: Daily service to Doha
- Brussels Airlines: Direct flights to Brussels
- KLM: Direct flights to Amsterdam
Important note: Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags. Do not bring plastic bags into the country. They will be confiscated at the airport. Use fabric bags or paper bags instead.
Future development: Bugesera International Airport is under construction approximately 25 km south of Kigali, intended to replace KGL as Rwanda's main international gateway. Until it opens, all flights operate from KGL.

Getting In and Out
KGL is located 10 km east of Kigali city center, approximately 20-30 minutes by car depending on traffic. Kigali traffic is generally manageable compared to other African capitals, though rush hours (7-9 AM and 5-7 PM) can add 10-15 minutes.
Estimated travel times from the airport:
- Kigali city center: 20-30 min
- Kimihurura / Kacyiru (embassy area): 15-25 min
- Nyamirambo: 30-40 min
- Kigali Convention Centre: 20-30 min
Transport options are limited to taxis, moto-taxis, and pre-arranged hotel transfers. There is no public bus service directly from the airport terminal.
Public Transit
Kigali does not have a direct public bus connection to the airport terminal. The closest public transit options require walking to the main road outside the airport compound.
Public Buses
Kigali's public bus network is operated by Kigali Bus Services (KBS) and Royal Express. Buses on the Remera-Downtown route pass near the airport on the main road (approximately 1 km walk from the terminal).
- Fare: RWF 300-500 (~$0.20-0.35 USD)
- Payment: Tap-and-go smart cards (available at bus stations and some shops)
- Hours: Approximately 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM
- Frequency: Every 10-20 minutes on major routes
This option is only practical for travelers with light luggage who are comfortable navigating local transport. For most visitors, a taxi or hotel transfer is the better choice.
Parking
KGL offers parking directly in front of the terminal building.
| Type | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term | RWF 500/hour (~$0.35 USD) | Adjacent to terminal |
| Daily | RWF 5,000/day (~$3.50 USD) | Same lot |
The parking area is small. For extended stays, some travelers use nearby hotel parking or arrange for drop-off and pick-up instead.
Food
Dining options at KGL are limited. The airport has a small number of food outlets in both the landside and airside areas.
Landside (before security):
- Cafe and restaurant: Basic meals, coffee, snacks, and beverages in the departures hall
- Small kiosk: Packaged snacks and drinks near arrivals
Airside (after security):
- Departure lounge cafe: Sandwiches, light meals, coffee, and soft drinks
- Bar: Beer, wine, and spirits
Pricing: Food at the airport is more expensive than in the city. A basic meal costs RWF 5,000-10,000 ($3.50-7 USD). Coffee is around RWF 2,000-3,000 ($1.50-2 USD).
Tip: Kigali is known for excellent coffee. Rwandan single-origin coffee is available at the airport, though the selection is better in the city. If time allows, eat in town before heading to the airport.
WiFi
Free WiFi is available at Kigali International Airport.
- Network: "KGL_Free_WiFi" or similar (network name may vary)
- Speed: Adequate for browsing and messaging
- Reliability: Generally functional, though speeds can slow during busy periods
For faster and more reliable connectivity, purchase a local SIM card with data or use the lounge WiFi.
Local SIM
SIM cards are available at the airport arrivals hall from Rwanda's two main mobile operators.
MTN Rwanda
The dominant carrier with the widest coverage nationwide, including rural areas.
| Package | Price (RWF) | USD | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIM card | 500 | $0.35 | — |
| Daily bundle | 500 | $0.35 | 500MB |
| Weekly bundle | 2,500 | $1.75 | 3GB |
| Monthly bundle | 10,000 | $7 | 10GB |
Airtel Rwanda
Competitive pricing and good coverage in urban areas.
| Package | Price (RWF) | USD | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIM card | 500 | $0.35 | — |
| Weekly bundle | 2,000 | $1.40 | 2.5GB |
| Monthly bundle | 8,000 | $5.50 | 8GB |
Registration
- Passport required for SIM registration
- Registration is processed on the spot and takes 5-10 minutes
- Mobile money: Both MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are widely used in Rwanda for payments. Load credit onto your mobile money account for convenient cashless transactions across the country.
Tip: MTN has better coverage in remote areas, which matters if you are heading to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking or to Nyungwe Forest.
Cash & ATMs
Currency
Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Common denominations are RWF 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 notes. As of February 2026, the exchange rate is approximately RWF 1,400-1,450 = $1 USD.
US dollars are widely accepted at hotels, tour operators, and some restaurants, though change will be given in RWF. Notes older than 2013 or in poor condition may be refused.
ATMs
Several ATMs are located in the arrivals hall:
- Bank of Kigali
- Equity Bank
- I&M Bank
ATM tips:
- Most ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard
- Typical withdrawal limit: RWF 300,000-500,000 per transaction (~$200-350 USD)
- ATM fees vary by bank; your home bank may also charge international withdrawal fees
Currency Exchange
Currency exchange desks are available in the arrivals hall. Airport rates include a markup of 3-5% compared to city exchange bureaus. For better rates, exchange money at forex bureaus in Kigali city center or withdraw from ATMs.
Payment Methods
- Credit/debit cards: Accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and supermarkets. Visa is more widely accepted than Mastercard.
- Mobile money (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money): The most common payment method in Rwanda. Useful for small transactions if you have a local SIM.
- Cash: Essential for markets, small shops, moto-taxis, and rural areas.
Shopping
Shopping at KGL is limited compared to larger international airports.
Duty-Free
A small duty-free shop operates in the international departure area after security:
- Alcohol and tobacco: Standard selection
- Perfumes and cosmetics: Limited selection
- Rwandan coffee: Packaged single-origin coffee beans
- Local crafts: Small selection of Rwandan handicrafts
Best Purchases
- Rwandan coffee: High-quality single-origin beans. Brands like Buf Coffee, Question Coffee, and Gorilla Coffee are well-regarded.
- Gorilla crafts: Handmade items related to Rwanda's mountain gorillas
- Imigongo art: Traditional Rwandan cow dung art with geometric patterns
- Agaseke baskets: Traditional woven peace baskets, a Rwandan cultural symbol
Tip: The duty-free selection is small. For a wider range of Rwandan products, visit the Caplaki Craft Village or shops in Kigali city center before heading to the airport.
Lounges
Lounge options at KGL are limited given the airport's size.
Priority Pass Lounges
Pearl Lounge (International Departures, Airside)
- Access: Priority Pass, LoungeKey, DragonPass
- Hours: Opens for international departures
- Amenities: Seating, snacks, drinks, WiFi
- Day pass: Available for purchase (~$35-45 USD)

Airline Lounges
RwandAir Premium Lounge (International Departures)
- Access: RwandAir Business Class passengers, RwandAir Dream Miles Gold/Platinum members

No Domestic Lounge
There is no dedicated lounge for domestic departures. Domestic passengers with Priority Pass or airline lounge access should check current availability, as access policies may change.

Practical Tips
- Safety: Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa. Kigali is safe to walk around, even at night in most areas.
- Cleanliness: Rwanda takes environmental policy seriously. The country bans single-use plastic bags, and monthly community cleaning days (Umuganda, last Saturday of each month) keep cities spotless.
- Language: Kinyarwanda is the national language. English and French are widely spoken. Swahili is also common.
- Visa: Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival ($50 USD) or apply for an e-visa in advance at irembo.gov.rw. East African Community citizens enter freely.
- Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. RWF 2,000-5,000 ($1.50-3.50 USD) for good service. Gorilla trekking guides and porters expect tips of $10-20 USD.
- Weather: Kigali has a mild climate year-round (17-27C) due to its altitude (~1,500m). Rainy seasons are March-May and October-November.
- Yellow fever: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Carry your vaccination card.
- Electricity: Type C and J plugs, 230V. Bring a universal adapter.
