Madrid Airport Guide

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is Spain's principal airport and Iberia's main hub, northeast of central Madrid.

The airport has four terminals divided into two separate complexes:

• T1, T2, and T3 form one connected landside complex, but airline assignments—not simply Schengen status—determine the check-in terminal.
• T4 and T4S form the other complex. Iberia and many partner airlines use it, while other oneworld and non-oneworld airlines may use different terminals. T4S is reached from T4 by the underground automated people mover (APM).

Check the official airline directory. The public free shuttle links T1, T2, T3, and T4 landside. Aena also provides restricted connection routes for certain passengers with a boarding pass and baggage checked through, including a T1–T4S transfer bus.

T4's distinctive architecture features a wave-like bamboo ceiling and extensive natural lighting, making it one of Europe's most impressive airport terminals.

Key fact: Most passengers changing between the T1–T3 complex and T4 use the landside free shuttle and clear the applicable controls again. Eligible passengers with a boarding pass and baggage checked to destination may have access to restricted connection corridors or Aena's T1–T4S transfer bus; follow the airline and Aena signs.

Terminal Layout

T1-T2-T3 complex:

• Terminals are adjacent and connected via walkways
• Airlines and flights are assigned across T1, T2, and T3; use the live flight display rather than assuming a terminal by destination

T4-T4S complex:

• T4: check-in, arrivals, and H/J/K boarding gates
• T4S: M and S boarding gates, connected to T4 by the underground APM

Getting Between Terminal Complexes

• Public terminal shuttle: free, 24 hours, serving T1, T2, T3, and T4. Stops and direction differ by terminal; consult Aena's terminal transport guide.
• Walking: available among T1, T2, and T3 landside. There is no public pedestrian connection to T4.
• T4–T4S: use the APM; T4S is not a roadside terminal and cannot be reached by the public terminal shuttle.
• Protected T1–T4S route: Aena documents a separate free bus for eligible passengers with an onward boarding pass and baggage checked to destination. Ask the airline or an Aena information desk before exiting the transit route.

Connection time varies by exact gates, airline, baggage, terminal, Schengen status, and controls. Use the minimum accepted by the airline for a protected ticket. Separate-ticket connections need a substantially larger buffer and may require entry eligibility for Spain.

International Arrivals Process

For passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area:

1. Exit aircraft at your arrival gate
2. Follow "Conexiones/Connections" signs if connecting
3. Clear passport control when entering the Schengen Area
4. Collect checked bags if they are not tagged through or the airline instructs you to do so
5. Re-check bags if required
6. Follow the assigned restricted route or take the public shuttle if changing complexes
7. Clear security at your departure terminal

Schengen connections: If arriving from and departing to Schengen countries, no passport control is required. Connections are faster.

T4-T4S Automated Train

The underground APM is the required passenger link between T4 and T4S. Aena publishes an approximately three-minute ride. Follow the gate letter and signs; allow additional time for walking and any passport or security control.

MAD is northeast of central Madrid. Metro Line 8 serves both airport complexes, while Cercanías trains serve T4. EMT's Airport Express and other buses serve multiple terminals. T1–T3 passengers using Cercanías take the free airport shuttle to T4; T4S passengers first use the APM to T4. Taxis and licensed VTC/app services are road alternatives and remain subject to traffic.

Uber, Cabify, and Bolt provide licensed VTC or taxi booking options in Madrid. Follow the app and airport signs to the assigned pickup point; availability and price vary.

Official Taxis (white cars with red diagonal stripe):

• Flat rate to central Madrid: €33 (includes supplements for airport, luggage)
• Flat rate covers destinations within the M-30 ring road
• Destinations outside M-30 use the meter
• Taxi ranks outside all terminal arrivals, 24/7

Tips:

• Only use official taxis from designated ranks
• Confirm the flat rate before departure
• The €33 rate is per taxi, not per person

Metro Line 8 (Recommended)

Madrid Metro Line 8 serves the airport and connects at Nuevos Ministerios with other Metro lines and Cercanías. It does not run directly through the historic centre.

Stations at MAD:

• Aeropuerto T4: Serves T4/T4S
• Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3: Serves T1, T2, and T3

Key interchanges include Nuevos Ministerios, Colombia, and Mar de Cristal. Check Metro de Madrid for the travel-date timetable and fare. Some ticket types require an airport supplement at either airport station.

How to take the Metro from T4:

1. Follow signs to "Metro" after exiting arrivals
2. Purchase a single ticket or tourist pass at machines (accept cards)
3. Take Line 8 toward "Nuevos Ministerios"
4. Transfer at Nuevos Ministerios for most central destinations

Cercanías Trains

Cercanías services C1 and C10 serve the railway station at T4, linking it with stations including Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, and Atocha. T1–T3 passengers use the free terminal shuttle to T4. Consult Aena and Renfe for current stopping patterns, engineering work, and fares.

Express Bus (Línea Exprés Aeropuerto)

EMT line 203 provides 24-hour airport express service:

• Route: airport terminals to central Madrid, with Atocha served during the daytime pattern and Cibeles as the overnight city terminus
• Fare: Aena currently publishes a €5 standard fare; verify before travel
• Hours: 24 hours

Stops and frequencies vary by time. Check Aena's official bus guide or EMT's live planner before heading to the curb.

Other EMT and intercity bus routes serve local interchange points and surrounding municipalities.
