Doha Airport Guide

Hamad International Airport (DOH) is Doha's main airport and Qatar Airways' hub. It is one integrated terminal with concourses A–E, but it is large enough that your gate—not a terminal number—should drive your plan. The expanded D and E concourses opened in 2025, so older maps and gate-range summaries can be misleading.

After check-in or transfer security, use the signs, moving walkways and airport train to reach the live gate shown on the flight display. Gate assignments can change during Qatar Airways' connecting banks, so find the route before stopping for food or shopping.

The central terminal is easy to recognise by Urs Fischer's Lamp Bear sculpture. That makes a useful meeting landmark, but distant gates in the expanded concourses can still take time to reach.

Follow the Transfer signs rather than Arrivals. Connecting passengers pass transfer security before proceeding to concourses A–E. If you do not have the onward boarding pass, use the relevant airline transfer counter or ask the operating airline where it will be issued.

Bags and separate tickets

On a through itinerary, confirm at origin that the baggage tag shows the final destination. If the bag is not checked through, you generally need the correct permission to enter Qatar, then collect it after immigration and customs and check in again. Treat separate tickets as an entry-and-recheck journey unless both airlines explicitly confirm otherwise.

Getting to the next gate

All five concourses are in the same connected terminal complex. Moving walkways serve the route, and the airport train helps with distant areas. Do not rely on old fixed airline-to-concourse lists: use the live gate display and leave margin for a remote stand or a long walk.

There is no trustworthy airport-wide minimum that applies to every airline, ticket and baggage arrangement. Use the connection accepted by the ticketing airline. If the itinerary is separate-ticketed or requires entry to Qatar, build backward from the next flight's check-in cut-off instead.

Leaving the airport on a layover

Entry permission depends on your passport and circumstances. Check Qatar's current government entry rules before departure; do not infer permission to enter from the fact that you can remain in airside transit.

The Doha Metro is the clear budget choice when it is running and your destination is near a station. Use a Karwa taxi or rideshare for door-to-door travel, heavy luggage or a trip outside rail hours. Road times vary with traffic, so check your map at arrival rather than relying on a fixed airport-to-district estimate.

Uber and Careem are both available at DOH. Follow signs to designated rideshare pickup areas outside the arrivals hall.

• West Bay: QAR 50-70 (~$14-19 USD)
• Souq Waqif: QAR 55-75 (~$15-21 USD)

Karwa Taxis (turquoise-colored) are Qatar's official taxi service and queue outside the arrivals hall. Taxis are metered:

• Flag fall: QAR 10
• Per kilometer: QAR 1.60
• Airport surcharge: QAR 4-5

Typical taxi fare to West Bay: QAR 50-70. All taxis accept card payments via Karwa's system. Taxis are clean, air-conditioned, and reliable.

The Doha Metro Red Line serves Hamad International Airport Terminal 1. It connects toward central interchanges and the wider rail network; check the platform display because some journeys may require a change at Oqba Ibn Nafie.

Metro Access

Follow the Metro signs after customs. Use Qatar Rail's journey planner or current map for the right interchange—Msheireb is the main interchange for the Gold and Green lines.

Metro fares

Qatar Rail's standard fare is QAR 2 for a single journey and QAR 6 for a day pass. This is a flat-fare system, not the zone-based QAR 2–3 scheme previously described here. Buy the appropriate standard travel card or ticket at the station and check Qatar Rail for current products and eligibility.

Metro hours

Qatar Rail's current pocket guide lists network service from 05:00 to 01:00 Saturday–Thursday and 09:00 to 01:00 Friday. First and last trains at the airport station are not necessarily at those exact times, and special-event or holiday hours can differ, so check Qatar Rail's live first/last-train information for your date.

Airport Express Bus

Karwa public buses also serve the airport. Do not rely on the old claim that route 777 runs via Souq Waqif and Msheireb: the airport's current route map shows it running toward The Pearl via Al Qassar Station. Use Mowasalat's Karwa Journey Planner for the current route, stop, operating time and fare.

DOH offers extensive parking facilities:

• Short-term parking: QAR 10/hour, QAR 100 maximum per 24 hours
• Long-term parking: QAR 50/day (covered), QAR 35/day (uncovered)
• Premium parking: QAR 20/hour, closest to terminal
• Valet parking: Available near departures

Short-term parking is located directly connected to the terminal. Long-term parking is a short shuttle ride away with free 24-hour transfers. Pre-booking via the Qatar Airways or airport website can provide discounts.

DOH offers extensive dining options throughout the terminal, with most restaurants open 24 hours.

Practical Tips

• Weather: Extremely hot from May-September (40-50C). November-March is pleasant (20-25C).
• Dress Code: Qatar is conservative. Modest dress is expected in public areas (shoulders and knees covered). Beach resorts have separate standards.
• Alcohol: Available only at licensed hotels and restaurants. Not sold in shops. Airport duty-free is popular for purchases.
• Currency: QAR is pegged to USD. Credit cards widely accepted.
• Ramadan: During Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is prohibited. Restaurants open after sunset.
• Photography: Avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and people without permission.

Getting Around Doha

The Doha Metro covers many visitor areas. Standard travel uses Qatar Rail's flat QAR 2 single-journey fare or QAR 6 day pass; check the current product rules before buying. Uber and Careem are available throughout the city. The Corniche waterfront provides a walking link between MIA Park, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif.
