About
Volotea is a Spanish low-cost carrier founded in 2011, headquartered in Barcelona with its operational base in Asturias, Spain. The airline was created by Carlos Munoz and Lazaro Ros, both former executives of Vueling, with a distinctive mission: connecting small and medium-sized European cities that are often underserved by major carriers.
Unlike many low-cost carriers that focus on large hub airports, Volotea deliberately targets secondary cities and regional airports across Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. This strategy provides point-to-point connections between smaller destinations that would otherwise require connecting through major hubs. The airline operates approximately 45 aircraft serving over 100 destinations across Europe and North Africa.
Volotea is not a member of any airline alliance. Instead of a traditional frequent flyer program, the airline offers Megavolotea, a subscription-based discount program that provides members with reduced fares and included cabin baggage.

Tips & Tricks
Booking:
- Book directly on volotea.com for better customer service during disruptions
- Compare total cost with bags vs legacy carriers - Volotea can be cheaper, but not always
- Watch for sales, especially for new route launches
- Megavolotea membership often goes on sale at EUR 29.99-39.99
- Book bags at initial booking for lowest prices
Megavolotea Strategy:
- Worth it if you fly Volotea 2+ times per year
- The included cabin bag alone covers the subscription cost in 1-2 flights
- Sign up during promotional periods for best value
- Megavolotea Plus makes sense for couples/families who always travel together
Bags:
- Always book bags online - airport fees are significantly higher
- Measure and weigh bags at home - limits are enforced
- 23 kg option is sufficient for most travelers; 32 kg rarely needed
- Personal item limit (10 kg) includes the bag weight
Seats:
- Traveling with companions? Book seats or risk separation
- Exit rows (11 on A319, 12-13 on A320) offer best legroom value
- Front rows have extra legroom but no under-seat storage
- Megavolotea includes free standard seat selection
At the Airport:
- Check in online 7 days before for best seat selection timing
- Arrive at least 2 hours before departure at busy airports
- Small regional airports have shorter queues but limited facilities
- Download boarding pass to phone in case of connectivity issues
Route Network:
- Volotea excels at connecting smaller cities directly
- Compare with connecting options via hubs - Volotea is often faster
- Greek island routes are highly seasonal (May-October)
- Some routes operate only 1-2x per week - check schedules carefully
Common Issues:
- No cabin bag included on basic fares - budget for this or get Megavolotea
- Seasonal routes may not be available year-round
- Limited flight frequencies on some routes
- No WiFi on board - download entertainment beforehand
Best Value:
- Volotea shines for point-to-point travel between smaller cities
- Compare total cost (base fare + bags + seats) with alternatives
- For regular travelers on Volotea routes, Megavolotea is excellent value
- Off-peak travel offers significantly lower fares
