About
Iberia (Iberia Lineas Aereas de Espana) is the flag carrier airline of Spain and one of the oldest airlines in the world, founded on June 28, 1927. Headquartered at Madrid-Barajas Airport, Iberia operates an extensive network connecting Europe with Latin America, North America, Africa, and Asia.
In 2011, Iberia merged with British Airways to form International Airlines Group (IAG), creating one of the world's largest airline groups. IAG also includes Aer Lingus, Vueling, and LEVEL. As a founding member of the Oneworld alliance, Iberia offers seamless connections to over 1,000 destinations through 13 partner airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas.
Iberia is the leading airline between Europe and Latin America, operating over 130 destinations in 39 countries. The airline is recognized for its strong presence in Spanish-speaking markets and its distinctive red and yellow livery inspired by the Spanish flag.

Tips & Tricks
Booking:
- Book directly on iberia.com for easier changes and customer service
- Compare Economy Basic total cost (with bags) to Optima before choosing
- Sign up for Iberia Plus before booking to earn Avios
- Use British Airways Avios for Iberia redemptions if better availability
At the Airport:
- Madrid T4 is large — allow 45+ minutes for connections within Terminal 4
- Use online check-in and go directly to bag drop
- Velazquez Lounge in T4 is excellent for Business Class passengers
- Priority security lanes available for Business and Oneworld status holders
Baggage:
- Always purchase baggage at booking time for lowest price
- Basic fares exclude checked bags — factor this into total cost comparison
- Weight limits are enforced — 23 kg in Economy, 32 kg in Business
Maximizing Avios:
- Transfer partners: Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards (to BA, then to Iberia)
- Iberia often has better Avios redemption rates than British Airways
- Avios + Cash option stretches points further
- Use Avios for short-haul European flights for best value
Upgrades:
- Paid upgrade offers may appear during online check-in
- Use Avios for cabin upgrades when available
- Platino and above get complimentary upgrade priority
- Separate subsidiary operating short-haul routes
- Iberia Plus benefits still apply
- Service is slightly more basic than mainline Iberia
Common Issues:
- Basic Economy restricts changes — ensure flexibility isn't needed
- Madrid-Barcelona flights run frequently — easy rebooking if you miss one
- Long-haul Turista Premium not available on all routes
- WiFi can be inconsistent on older aircraft
Latin America Routes:
- Iberia excels on this market with best frequencies
- Connecting via Madrid often cheaper than direct flights
- Business Class on South America routes is excellent value
