Barcelona Airport Guide

Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) has two separate terminals southwest of the city. Check T1 or T2 on the live flight information before travelling—an airline name alone is not reliable enough, and changing terminals means going landside.

• Terminal 1 uses boarding areas A–E for Schengen and non-Schengen flights.
• Terminal 2 is divided into T2A, T2B and T2C and also handles both Schengen and non-Schengen traffic. Current connection signs use Schengen gates R, S and U and non-Schengen gates M, W and Y.

T1 and T2 are not joined by a passenger walkway or airside corridor. Aena provides a free 24-hour shuttle, but you must leave the secure area, meet Spanish entry requirements when applicable and clear security again at the departure terminal.

Start with your terminals, boarding pass and baggage tag. If both flights use the same terminal, you have an onward boarding pass and the bag is checked through, follow Aena's Connecting Flights signs. The route may include security and passport control depending on whether each flight is inside or outside Schengen.

Same-terminal connections

At T1, Schengen flights use areas A, B and C while non-Schengen flights use D and E. At T2, both Schengen and non-Schengen routes exist; follow the live gate rather than assuming Terminal 2 is Schengen-only. Aena publishes a different signed route for each arrival/departure combination, and some non-Schengen transfers include both security and passport control.

If you need an onward boarding pass, checked baggage is not tagged through or your airline requires a new check-in, follow Baggage Reclaim/Exit and complete the normal departure process.

Changing T1 and T2

Every T1–T2 connection is landside. Follow Baggage Reclaim/Exit, collect baggage, take the free terminal shuttle, then check in and clear security at the new terminal. Non-Schengen arrivals must also complete the applicable passport process. The shuttle runs 24 hours, but frequency and journey time vary; check Aena's current stop information.

BCN has no universal minimum connection time that covers every airline, Schengen status and baggage arrangement. Use the time accepted by the ticketing airline. For separate tickets or a terminal change, build your plan backward from the next flight's check-in cut-off.

Use Aerobús for a direct ride to Plaça Catalunya, Metro L9 Sud for connections across the metro network, or the R2 Nord train when Terminal 2 and its city stops fit your trip. Taxis and ride apps are simpler for door-to-door travel, but road times vary with traffic.

Uber, Cabify and Bolt all have designated vehicle-for-hire pick-up areas at T1 and T2. Request the ride after landing, then follow Aena's terminal-specific signs rather than waiting at the taxi rank.

Taxis

Official taxis (black and yellow) use regulated flat-rate pricing to central Barcelona:

• To Barcelona city center: €39 (T1) / €39 (T2) flat rate
• Surcharges: €4.30 airport supplement included in flat rate; night surcharge (8 PM - 8 AM) may apply on metered routes
• To cruise port: €39

Taxis queue outside both terminals 24/7. Journey time: 25-35 minutes (longer in traffic).

Flat rates apply to Barcelona city center destinations. Trips outside the city use the meter.

Aerobús

Aerobús A1 serves Terminal 1 and A2 serves Terminal 2, with city-centre stops including Plaça Espanya and Plaça Catalunya. Check the operator for the current fare, first/last bus and ticket rules; do not board A1 or A2 solely because it arrives first.

Metro L9 Sud

The L9 Sud has stations at both terminals and connects with L1/L10 Sud at Torrassa, L5/L10 Sud at Collblanc and L3 at Zona Universitària. It does not run directly to Plaça Catalunya, so expect a change for much of central Barcelona.

Not every Barcelona travel product is valid at the airport gates. TMB specifically excludes products including the regular single ticket and T-casual, while the Airport Ticket and some passes are valid. Check TMB's current fare page before buying.

RENFE Cercanías Train (T2 Only)

The R2 Nord airport station currently serves Terminal 2. It is useful for Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and onward rail connections. If you are at T1, use the free terminal shuttle or choose Metro/Aerobús instead; the future T1 railway connection is still under construction. Night Bus (NitBus)

Night services include N17 for Terminal 1 and N18 between Plaça Catalunya and the airport, serving both terminals in the Barcelona direction. Confirm the stop, direction and timetable with Aena or the bus operator, especially around midnight.

BCN offers multiple parking options at both terminals.

BCN offers a variety of dining options in both terminals, with T1 having the better selection.

Terminal 1

Landside (before security):

• 100 Montaditos: Budget-friendly Spanish mini-sandwiches
• Flax & Kale Airport: Healthy options, smoothies, plant-based meals

Airside (after security):

• Enrique Tomás: Spanish ham (jamón) specialist - excellent for authentic Spanish cured meats
• TAPA TAPA: Traditional tapas in a sit-down setting
• El Nacional Airport: Upscale Spanish cuisine with multiple food stations
• Starbucks: Multiple locations throughout
• Burger King, McDonald's: Fast food options

Best for quality: El Nacional Airport (pricey but excellent) and Enrique Tomás for Spanish specialties.

Terminal 2

T2 has fewer options but adequate for quick meals:

• Rodilla: Spanish sandwich chain
• Cervecería: Spanish beer and tapas
• Fast food outlets: Standard options available

Tip: If you have time before a T2 flight, eat at T1 before taking the shuttle. T1 has significantly better dining variety.

Free WiFi is available throughout both terminals.

Pricing

Prepaid tourist SIMs start around €15-20 for 10-15GB. Airport prices are typically €5-10 higher than city shops.

Tips:

• For better prices, buy a SIM at any Vodafone, Orange, or Movistar store on Passeig de Gràcia or Portal de l'Àngel
• EU roaming is included on all standard Spanish SIMs
• eSIM options (Airalo, Holafly) can be purchased and activated before arrival

ATMs are available throughout both terminals in arrivals and departures areas.

Currency: Euro (€)

Currency exchange: Bureaux de change are available but offer poor rates (5-10% markup typical). Use ATMs for better rates or exchange currency before arrival.

Tips:

• Use bank ATMs (CaixaBank, Santander, BBVA) rather than independent ATMs (Euronet, Travelex) to avoid excessive fees
• When ATMs ask "with or without conversion" - always choose without for your bank's rate
• Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted throughout Spain
• Some small vendors and traditional markets may prefer cash

BCN offers extensive retail and duty-free shopping, primarily in Terminal 1.

Terminal 1:

• World Duty Free: Large flagship store after security with Spanish wines, spirits, perfumes, and luxury goods
• Specialty shops: Spanish products including Lladró porcelain, olive oil, and turrones (nougat)
