About
Germanwings ceased operations on October 24, 2020, with all flights absorbed into Eurowings. This guide provides historical information about the airline. For current travel needs, see Eurowings.
Germanwings GmbH was a German low-cost carrier and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa. Headquartered in Cologne, the airline operated primarily from its bases at Cologne/Bonn Airport and Stuttgart Airport, serving over 90 destinations across Europe.
The airline was originally founded in 1997 as Eurowings Flug GmbH, operating regional flights under the Eurowings brand. In 2002, Lufthansa acquired the carrier and relaunched it as Germanwings, positioning it as a low-cost alternative to compete with budget carriers like Ryanair and easyJet in the German market.
At its peak in the early 2010s, Germanwings operated a fleet of approximately 30 Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, carrying around 8 million passengers annually. The airline was known for its purple and white livery featuring a distinctive heart-shaped logo.
In 2015, Lufthansa initiated a major restructuring of its low-cost operations. Germanwings was gradually rebranded as "Eurowings operated by Germanwings" before full integration. This transition accelerated following the COVID-19 pandemic, with Lufthansa announcing in April 2020 that Germanwings would be discontinued entirely. The last Germanwings-branded flight operated on October 24, 2020.
The airline was tragically associated with the crash of Flight 9525 on March 24, 2015, in the French Alps. All 150 people on board perished when the co-pilot deliberately crashed the aircraft during a flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf. The disaster led to significant changes in aviation regulations regarding cockpit access and pilot mental health screening across the industry.
