Cancun Airport Guide

Cancún International Airport (CUN), operated by ASUR, is the main air gateway to Cancún and the Riviera Maya. The airport has four separate passenger terminals. Terminal use changes with airline and flight, so check the booking, boarding pass, airline, or live airport information rather than relying on a fixed carrier list.

If the onward flight uses another terminal, follow airport signs or staff directions to the interterminal transport. Do not assume that a terminal change is a short indoor walk. The official ASUR airport maps show the separate terminal buildings.

Key fact: Confirm both terminal numbers. A change of terminal is a landside transfer between separate buildings and requires security at the departure terminal.

Terminal Layout

Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4 are separate passenger buildings. ASUR publishes maps for the terminal complex, while airline and flight information provides the operational terminal. Use the number on the current flight record, especially after a schedule change.

Getting Between Terminals

Use the airport's marked terminal-transport service for a terminal change. The free Tren Maya airport shuttle also links Terminals 1-4 with the rail station, but its purpose and stop sequence may not match a time-critical flight connection; follow on-site directions for the next suitable vehicle.

Minimum connection times and baggage-transfer rules are itinerary-specific. Use the airline's protected-connection time. On separate tickets, plan for arrival formalities, baggage collection, terminal transport, check-in cutoffs, and a new security screening.

International Arrivals Process

If arriving internationally and connecting to another flight:

1. Follow signs to immigration and customs.
2. Collect checked baggage when instructed; confirm any through-bag process with the airline.
3. Enter the public arrivals area.
4. If necessary, take the marked interterminal transport to the departure terminal.
5. Complete check-in/bag drop and security for the onward flight.

Tips for Connections

• Recheck the terminal after any airline schedule notification.
• Keep onward flight details available for airport and airline staff.
• Allow substantial extra time when tickets are separate or the terminal changes.
• ADO serves Terminals 2, 3, and 4, not Terminal 1; this matters if leaving the airport between flights.

CUN connects with Cancún, the Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen, and other Riviera Maya destinations by road. Traffic on Highway 307 can make road times unpredictable.

The principal options are authorized transfers/taxis, pre-arranged hotel or private shuttles, rental cars, ADO coaches, and the Tren Maya via its separate Cancún Aeropuerto station. The rail station is not inside a passenger terminal: Tren Maya provides a free connecting shuttle serving Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4. Check the train timetable before relying on it because departures are scheduled rather than turn-up-and-go.

Uber operates at CUN and is typically the most affordable option:

Uber Pickup:

• Request your ride inside the terminal
• Follow signs to designated rideshare pickup area (varies by terminal)
• Terminal 4: Pickup area is outside arrivals, follow "Uber" signs
• Typical wait time: 5-15 minutes

Important: Local taxi unions have historically opposed rideshare. While Uber operates, pickup locations may be less convenient than in other cities. Follow the app's instructions carefully.

Authorized Airport Taxis:

Official airport taxis use fixed rates by zone. Purchase tickets at booths inside arrivals.

• Purchase at kiosk before exiting terminal
• Fixed price by destination zone
• More expensive than Uber but guaranteed availability
• Only use official yellow airport taxis - do not accept rides from solicitors

• Playa del Carmen: MXN 1,500-2,200 (~USD $85-125)

Private Transfers:

For groups or destinations like Playa del Carmen/Tulum, pre-booked private transfers can be cost-effective. Many hotels offer transfer packages. Compare prices before arrival.

ADO Bus Service

ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) operates first-class bus service from CUN to destinations throughout the Riviera Maya and beyond.

ADO has customer-service modules and outdoor boarding areas at Terminals 2, 3, and 4. Terminal 1 does not have ADO boarding. Search the exact terminal and date on ADO before buying; a coach may serve the airport terminals in sequence.

ADO currently sells airport trips to Cancún Centro, the Hotel Zone/Punta Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and other destinations available in its booking system. Routes, stopping patterns, fares, and departure times vary by date.

How to ride ADO:

1. Select the terminal where the flight arrives when searching ADO.
2. Buy through ADO or at the terminal module, subject to availability.
3. Follow the terminal-specific directions on the ticket and signs to the outdoor platform.
4. Confirm the destination and departure time before boarding.

Tips:

• Booking online can avoid a sold-out preferred departure.
• Allow for immigration, baggage delivery, and movement to the platform; do not book against the scheduled landing time.

Tren Maya

The Cancún Aeropuerto rail station is reached by a free Tren Maya shuttle from all four terminals. Check the official Tren Maya booking/timetable for the current destinations and times, then allow time for the terminal-to-station transfer. It is a regional/intercity railway, not a frequent metro to Cancún's Hotel Zone.

Colectivos (Shared Vans)

Colectivos are shared passenger vans that run along Highway 307:

• Much cheaper than taxis: MXN 50-150 (~USD $3-8) to most destinations
• Depart when full (typically 10-15 passengers)
• Less comfortable with luggage
• Pickup available outside airport area (short walk or taxi to colectivo stands)

Note: Colectivos from the airport require walking outside the terminal area. Most tourists find ADO buses more convenient.

CUN offers parking facilities at all terminals operated by ASUR:

For travelers based in Cancún, airport parking is useful for departures. Most tourists arrive via other transport.

CUN has expanded dining options across all terminals, though selection is best in Terminals 3 and 4.

CUN offers duty-free and general retail across terminals:

Lounge options at CUN are more limited than major hub airports.
