Introduction

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is Arizona's largest and busiest airport, serving the greater Phoenix metropolitan area and the entire state. Located just 4 miles east of downtown Phoenix, it is one of the most conveniently situated major airports in the United States. PHX handles over 50 million passengers annually and serves as a major hub for American Airlines and a significant focus city for Southwest Airlines.

The airport has three terminals numbered 2, 3, and 4 (Terminal 1 was demolished in 1990):

  • Terminal 2: Smaller terminal serving select carriers (Alaska, Hawaiian, Sun Country)
  • Terminal 3: Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, Frontier, and other domestic carriers
  • Terminal 4: American Airlines hub, largest terminal with 8 concourses (A-D North and A-D South)

All terminals are connected by the free PHX Sky Train, an automated people mover that also links to the Valley Metro Rail and the Rental Car Center. Terminal 4 is by far the largest, handling approximately 80% of all passengers.

PHX is known for its efficient operations and relatively short security wait times compared to other major US airports. The desert climate means summer temperatures can exceed 110°F (43°C), which occasionally affects flight operations during extreme heat.
