Charlotte Airport Guide

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) serves Charlotte, North Carolina, and is a major American Airlines connecting hub.

The airport's official passenger guide describes a single terminal building connecting five concourses, A through E. All gates are under one roof and accessible from every security checkpoint:

• Concourse A has two gate areas linked by the A Connector.
• Concourses B and C extend from the central Atrium area.
• Concourses D and E share a connector on the other side of the Atrium.

Airline and gate assignments vary by flight, so use the live boarding pass and airport displays rather than a fixed concourse-by-airline list.

Key fact: All five concourses connect airside, and CLT has no train or shuttle between gates. Domestic connections normally stay inside security; international arrivals that have not completed U.S. preclearance are the important exception because they must complete federal arrival formalities.

Terminal Layout

CLT's concourses branch from the Atrium and connecting corridors. Follow overhead signs on foot; there is no people mover. The CLT interactive map can calculate an estimated walk between your actual gates and is more useful than a static concourse-to-concourse table.

Airlines apply their own minimum connection times to through tickets. Even when an itinerary is legal, leave extra margin for a gate at the far end of a concourse, congestion, mobility needs, and a delayed inbound flight. Separate-ticket travelers also need enough time for any baggage claim, check-in cutoff, and security screening.

International Arrivals (Concourse D)

If your international flight was not precleared before departure, follow signs to the Concourse D federal inspection facility. U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists its CLT Enrollment on Arrival location in the Concourse D Federal Inspection Area.

1. Complete CBP inspection and follow the signs for baggage and customs.
2. Follow your airline's instructions to recheck any bag that is not already cleared through.
3. Re-enter the secure area and walk to the onward gate.

Flights arriving from a U.S. preclearance airport enter like domestic arrivals and can proceed directly to the onward gate. Allow a substantial buffer for any connection that requires CBP processing; the airport does not promise a fixed queue time.

Tips for Tight Connections

• Check both gate letters and gate numbers as soon as you land.
• Use the airport's interactive map for a current walking estimate.
• Tell the airline in advance if you need wheelchair or connection assistance.
• Do not leave the secure area during a domestic connection; every concourse is reachable post-security.

CLT is west of Uptown Charlotte. Taxi, rideshare, rental car, hotel shuttle, and CATS bus are the main ground-transport choices.

There is no LYNX light-rail station at the airport. For Uptown, the direct public-transport option is the CATS Route 5 Sprinter bus to Charlotte Transportation Center. Route 60 instead connects the airport with the Blue Line at Tyvola station.

Uber and Lyft are readily available at CLT. The designated pickup area is on the Ground Transportation level, one floor below baggage claim.

How to get picked up:

1. After collecting bags, follow signs to "Ground Transportation"
2. Take the escalator or elevator down one level
3. Exit through the doors to the rideshare pickup lanes
4. Request your ride from the designated zone

Route 5 Sprinter to Uptown

The CATS Sprinter Airport Connector runs directly between CLT and Charlotte Transportation Center in Uptown. CATS currently lists a $2.50 fare and 30-minute weekday frequency, but check the linked schedule for your travel date and late-night service.

1. Follow airport signs to the CATS bus stop after baggage claim.
2. Board the Route 5 Sprinter toward Charlotte Transportation Center.
3. Transfer at the transportation center for other Uptown bus, Blue Line, or Gold Line destinations.

Route 60 to the Blue Line

Route 60 runs between CLT and Tyvola Road, including a connection at Tyvola Blue Line station. Choose it when your destination is better served by the Blue Line south of Uptown; for central Uptown, the direct Sprinter avoids an extra transfer.

CATS publishes both routes on the airport-connector page. Check the live schedule rather than relying on fixed first/last-bus times in a guide.
