Oakland Airport Guide

Oakland International Airport (OAK) serves Oakland and the East Bay. Its passenger complex has two adjacent terminals with 29 gates in total: Port of Oakland planning material identifies 16 gates in Terminal 1 and 13 in Terminal 2. The international-arrivals inspection facility connects to Terminal 1.

The concourses are linked post-security, while both terminals also have their own public check-in, baggage-claim, and security areas. Airline and gate use can change, so confirm the terminal on the current flight record rather than using a fixed carrier list.

BART's OAK Airport station is across Airport Drive from Terminal 1 baggage claim and a short walk from Terminal 2. The airport connector is a separate BART service to Coliseum station; change there to the main BART network.

Bay Area Airports

The Bay Area's other major commercial airports are San Francisco (SFO) and San Jose (SJC). They are separate airports with no protected inter-airport transfer. For OAK to SFO by public transport, take the airport connector to Coliseum and use BART's trip planner for the current mainline route; one or more additional transfers may be required. Treat flights on separate tickets at different airports as a self-transfer and leave contingency for rail disruption, road traffic, check-in, and security.

OAK's two concourses are connected post-security, so a passenger already in the secure area can follow airport signs between them. Outside security, the terminal fronts are adjacent and walkable.

Terminal Layout

Port of Oakland documents describe Terminal 1 with 16 gates and Terminal 2 with 13 gates. Gate numbering is not a continuous terminal-number sequence: operational material lists Terminal 1 gates primarily in the single digits through 17 and Terminal 2 gates primarily from 20 through 32. Use the boarding pass and flight displays for the assigned gate.

Getting Between Terminals

No inter-terminal shuttle is needed: walk through the signed post-security connector or along the public frontage if landside. Allow time based on the assigned gates and any security process rather than an unsupported gate-to-gate or minimum-connection table. For separate tickets, confirm baggage and re-check requirements with the airlines.

International Arrivals

International arrivals use the federal inspection facility connected to Terminal 1. If connecting onward:

1. Exit plane at your arrival gate
2. Clear immigration at the Federal Inspection Services facility
3. Collect checked bags at carousel
4. Clear customs
5. Re-check bags if connecting (at the recheck counter)
6. Re-clear security at TSA checkpoint
7. Proceed to your departure gate

Ask the operating airline where to re-check bags and whether the connection is protected; border and security wait times are variable.

OAK lies south of central Oakland near I-880. BART is the principal regional transit option: walk to OAK Airport station, ride the airport connector to Coliseum, then transfer to a mainline train for Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, or other destinations. Check BART's planner for the current route, service hours, and fare.

Uber and Lyft are available at OAK with a designated pickup zone.

Getting to BART

1. From baggage claim, follow the BART signs and cross Airport Drive to OAK Airport station; BART notes that the entrance is opposite Terminal 1 baggage claim and a short walk from Terminal 2.
2. Ride the Oakland Airport Connector to Coliseum.
3. At Coliseum, transfer to the appropriate mainline BART train. A second transfer may be required for some destinations.

AC Transit operates bus routes connecting OAK to local East Bay destinations:
