Introduction

Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is the only international airport in Kuwait, located in the Farwaniya Governorate approximately 15.5 km south of Kuwait City center. The airport serves as the main hub for Kuwait Airways (the national carrier) and Jazeera Airways (Kuwait's low-cost carrier), handling flights to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and North America.

The airport currently operates from three terminals:

  • Terminal 1: The original terminal designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, opened in 1979. Serves all international airlines except Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways.
  • Terminal 4: Opened in August 2018, exclusively serves Kuwait Airways. Modern facility covering 55,000 square meters with 16 gates.
  • Terminal 5: Opened in May 2018, exclusively serves Jazeera Airways. A dedicated low-cost terminal adjacent to Terminal 1 with its own check-in, security, and arrival facilities.

Terminal 2 (Under Construction): A major new terminal designed by Foster + Partners is scheduled to open in late 2026. The US$4.3 billion facility will initially handle 13 million passengers annually, with capacity eventually reaching 50 million passengers. The triangular building will feature 28 gates, 4,500 parking spaces, and a 400-bed airside hotel.

Getting In and Out

KWI is located 15.5 km south of Kuwait City center. Travel times to popular areas:

  • Kuwait City Center: 20-30 minutes
  • Kuwait Towers / Sharq: 20-25 minutes
  • Salmiya: 20-30 minutes
  • The Avenues Mall: 15-20 minutes

Kuwait does not have a metro or rail system. Transport options are limited to taxis, rideshare apps, buses, and private car hire. Traffic can be heavy during rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM).

Taxi & Rideshare

Uber is not available in Kuwait. The main rideshare alternatives are:

  • Careem: The most popular rideshare app in Kuwait (Dubai-based). Fares start from KWD 1.5 (~$5 USD). Download the app before arrival.
  • Q8 Taxi: Local taxi booking app
  • Grand Limo: Premium car service app

Airport Taxis (Karwa-style taxis) queue outside the arrivals hall at all terminals:

  • Kuwait City Center: KWD 7-8 (~$22-26 USD)
  • Salmiya: KWD 8-10 (~$26-33 USD)
  • The Avenues Mall: KWD 5-7 (~$16-23 USD)

Tips:

  • Taxis should use meters (starting fare around KWD 1 per km), but drivers often don't turn them on. Agree on a fare before departure.
  • Late-night fares (10 PM - 6 AM) may be slightly higher
  • Taxi drivers may not speak English; have your destination written in Arabic or show a map
  • All terminals have clearly marked taxi pickup areas outside arrivals

Public Transit

Kuwait's bus network is basic but functional. Two operators serve the city:

Bus Routes from Airport

  • Line 13: Airport - Khaitan - Shuwaikh - Sheraton
  • Line 99: Airport - Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh - Farwaniya - Khaitan - South Surra - Subhan
  • Line 501: Airport - Farwaniya - Omariya - Arabiya

Fares

Operator Single Fare Monthly Pass
KPTC 250 fils (~$0.80 USD) KWD 10 / 31 days
Citybus 300 fils (~$1 USD) Various options

Purchase a K-Card (rechargeable transit card) from KPTC stations or pay cash on board. Children under 10 ride free on KPTC buses.

Practical note: Buses are infrequent and routes can be confusing. For most visitors, taxis or Careem are far more practical despite the higher cost.

  • Photography: Avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and people without permission.

Getting Around Kuwait

Without a metro system, getting around Kuwait requires:

  • Taxis: Agree on fare beforehand
  • Rental car: Available at airport, but traffic can be challenging

For short visits, Careem is recommended over rental cars unless you plan extensive exploration.
