Dubai Airport Guide

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is Dubai's main airport and the primary hub for Emirates. It is a very large connecting airport: Dubai Airports recorded 95.2 million passengers in 2025, so knowing your terminal and gate area before you start walking matters more than memorising a list of airlines.

DXB has three terminals and five main gate areas:

• Terminal 1 uses D Gates, reached from the terminal by airport train.
• Terminal 2 uses F Gates and sits apart from the Terminal 1 and 3 complex.
• Terminal 3 uses A, B and C Gates. A Gates require a short airport-train ride; you can walk between B and C Gates.

Terminal 3 is primarily the Emirates complex, but flydubai and a small number of other airlines also use it. Check the terminal on your flight confirmation rather than choosing a terminal by airline name alone.

UAE Airports

Dubai and the neighbouring emirates have several airports that can appear in the same flight search. They are not interchangeable terminals: changing airport means entering the UAE when required, collecting any checked bag and making a surface journey before the next check-in deadline.

Sharjah (SHJ) — 18 km northeast

• Air Arabia's hub and a common low-cost alternative to DXB
• No direct rail connection from DXB

Al Maktoum / Dubai World Central (DWC) — approximately 60 km from DXB

• Dubai's second airport near Expo City
• A more limited passenger schedule than DXB
• RTA bus or taxi connections from Ibn Battuta and Expo 2020 Metro stations

Abu Dhabi (AUH) — 116 km southwest

• Etihad Airways' hub and a separate airport in Abu Dhabi
• A long road transfer from DXB, with traffic and check-in time to consider

Watch out for separate tickets: do not assume an airline will transfer your baggage between DXB, DWC, SHJ or AUH. Confirm baggage arrangements with the operating airlines, then build your plan backward from the next flight's check-in cut-off. For a DXB-DWC change, Dubai Airports specifically directs passengers to clear passport control, collect baggage and continue by taxi or via Metro plus an onward bus.

Start with the two boarding passes. If your bags are checked through and your airline has issued the onward boarding pass, follow the Connections signs and use the transfer route your airline assigns. If you still need a boarding pass, follow signs to a transfer desk before heading toward a gate.

How DXB's gates connect

• Terminal 1 / D Gates: an airport train links the terminal and D Gates.
• Terminal 3 / A Gates: use the airport train from the main Terminal 3 area.
• Terminal 3 / B and C Gates: these gate areas are connected on foot.
• Terminal 2 / F Gates: Terminal 2 is a separate building. Ask your airline or a Guest Experience Ambassador for the correct transfer route when your itinerary changes terminals.

The catch: a terminal change is not automatically a landside taxi trip, and it is not automatically an airside walk either. Your route depends on the terminals, your airline arrangement and whether your baggage is checked through. Follow the transfer routing given on arrival rather than leaving the secure area on your own.

Through ticket versus separate tickets

On a protected, through-booked connection, use the connection time accepted by the airline and go straight to the transfer route. DXB is spread out, so do not linger until you know your next gate.

With separate tickets, assume you may need to clear passport control, collect your bag and check in again. Dubai Airports says passengers who are eligible to enter Dubai generally need to do this when their bags are not transferred. A paid baggage-transfer service may be available through Marhaba for some passengers who cannot enter the UAE; ask at the transfer desk rather than relying on it in advance.

If the next flight leaves from Dubai World Central (DWC), that is an airport change, not a terminal transfer. You must enter the UAE, collect baggage and travel across Dubai; Dubai Airports places DWC approximately 60 km from DXB.

DXB is close to Deira and northeast of Downtown Dubai. Use the Red Line Metro when your destination is near a station and your flight arrives during operating hours; use a taxi or rideshare for a late arrival, heavy luggage or a hotel far from the line. Road times vary sharply with traffic:

• Deira: 10-15 minutes
• Downtown Dubai/Burj Khalifa: 15-25 minutes
• Dubai Marina/JBR: 30-45 minutes
• Palm Jumeirah: 35-50 minutes
• Abu Dhabi: 60-90 minutes

The Dubai Metro Red Line serves Terminals 1 and 3 directly. Terminal 2 has no Metro station.

Uber and Careem (the local rideshare service, now owned by Uber) are both available at DXB. Follow signs to the designated rideshare pickup areas.

Typical rideshare fares:

• Deira: AED 35-50 (~$10-14 USD)
• Downtown Dubai: AED 50-75 (~$14-20 USD)
• Dubai Marina: AED 80-120 (~$22-33 USD)
• Abu Dhabi: AED 250-350 (~$68-95 USD)

Dubai Taxis (cream-colored with red roofs) queue outside all terminals. Taxis are metered with a AED 25 airport surcharge. Fares are similar to rideshare prices. All taxis accept card payments.

Ladies-only taxis (pink roofs) are available for female passengers traveling alone or with children.

The Dubai Metro Red Line is the practical public-transport choice from Terminals 1 and 3. It runs through central Dubai toward Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina and Expo City. You will need a Nol card; buy or top one up at the ticket office or vending machines in the Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 station.

Metro Access

• Terminal 1: DXB Terminal 1 Metro Station (directly connected)
• Terminal 3: DXB Terminal 3 Metro Station (directly connected)
• Terminal 2: No direct Metro station; use an RTA bus or take a taxi to a convenient Metro station

Metro Hours

• Monday to Thursday: 5:00 AM-midnight
• Friday: 5:00 AM-1:00 AM the next day
• Saturday: 5:00 AM-midnight
• Sunday: 8:00 AM-midnight

These are network opening hours, not a promise that the last train serves every destination at the closing time. Check the RTA journey planner for your date, especially on public holidays.

Public buses

RTA buses stop at dedicated stands outside Arrivals at Terminals 1, 2 and 3. They can be useful for Terminal 2 or a local destination that is not convenient by Metro. You need a Nol card to ride; check the RTA journey planner for the current route and stop rather than choosing a bus by destination name alone.

DXB offers extensive parking facilities:

• Short-term (Terminals 1 & 3): AED 20/hour, maximum AED 200/day
• Long-term parking: AED 100/day with free shuttle to terminals
• Multi-story parking: AED 10/hour, AED 80/day maximum

Pre-booking online via the Dubai Airports website can reduce rates by up to 30%. Valet parking is available at Terminal 3 for AED 350/day.

DXB offers extensive dining options across all terminals, open 24/7 in most cases.

Terminal 3 (Emirates)

• Concourse A: Costa Coffee, McDonald's, Shake Shack, Paul Bakery, Giraffe World Kitchen
• Concourse B: Five Guys, Pret A Manger, The Maine Oyster Bar, Jamie's Italian
• Concourse C: Tim Hortons, Wendy's, KFC, Irish Village pub

Terminal 1

• Concourse D: Costa Coffee, Starbucks, Papa John's, Subway, Asian Kitchen
• Duty Free Food Court: Multiple quick-service options

Terminal 2

• Airside: Limited options - Costa Coffee, Subway, basic food court
• Landside: Popeyes, Starbucks, local cafeterias

Terminal 3 has the best dining variety. For sit-down meals, Jamie's Italian and The Maine Oyster Bar in Concourse B are popular choices.

Free WiFi is available throughout DXB. Connect to "DXB Free WiFi" - no registration required for the first 60 minutes. After that, speeds may be reduced but connection continues.

For faster speeds, Emirates Business and First Class lounges offer premium WiFi. The paid "DXB Fast WiFi" tier is available for AED 50/day.

WiFi quality is generally good for video calls and streaming throughout the airport.

SIM cards are available at multiple locations:

• Etisalat and du stores in arrivals (all terminals)
• Dubai Duty Free electronics sections
• Vending machines near baggage claim

Bring your passport - it's required for SIM registration in the UAE. Activation is immediate at carrier stores.

ATMs are located throughout all terminals, operated by major UAE banks including Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq, and ENBD.

• Foreign transaction fees: Vary by your home bank, typically 2-3%

Currency Exchange: Travelex and UAE Exchange operate multiple counters in all terminals. Airport rates include a significant markup (5-10%). For better rates, exchange money at banks or malls in the city, or use ATMs.

Dubai is highly card-friendly - credit and debit cards are accepted nearly everywhere, often with no additional fees.

Dubai Duty Free is one of the world's largest airport retail operations, spanning all terminals with over 36,000 square meters of retail space.

Practical Tips

• Weather: Extremely hot from May-September (40-50C). December-February is pleasant (20-25C).
• Dress Code: Dubai is cosmopolitan but conservative dress is appreciated, especially at malls and public areas. Beach resorts have separate dress standards.
• Alcohol: Available at licensed hotels, restaurants, and bars. Not sold in regular shops. The airport duty-free is popular for purchases.
• Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. 10-15% at restaurants, small tips for taxi drivers.
• Currency: AED is pegged to USD. Credit cards widely accepted.

The Dubai Metro is the easiest way to explore during a layover. A trip to Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall) takes under 25 minutes from the airport and gives you access to Dubai's most iconic sights.
