About

British Airways is the United Kingdom's flag carrier and a founding member of oneworld. Baggage Policy

Direct answer: every BA fare includes one handbag or backpack up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm and one cabin bag up to 56 × 45 × 25 cm. Each can weigh up to 23 kg, but you must be able to lift the cabin bag into the overhead locker yourself. The smaller item is guaranteed in the cabin; the larger one may be placed in the hold on a busy flight.

Checked baggage depends on the fare shown in your booking. Economy Basic can include no checked bag on both short- and long-haul routes. A standard economy fare commonly includes one 23 kg bag, World Traveller Plus two 23 kg bags, Club Europe or Club World two 32 kg bags, and First three 32 kg bags.

BA's standard checked-bag dimensions are 90 × 75 × 43 cm, not the 158 cm linear limit common at U.S. airlines. No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg. Extra-bag and heavy-bag prices vary with route and point of sale, so use BA's baggage calculator rather than an old sterling-to-dollar table.

Sports equipment normally travels within the applicable checked allowance or as a paid extra bag and must meet BA's packing and size rules. Wheelchairs and personal mobility aids are carried without charge within the published limits. The British Airways Club and oneworld status can increase checked allowance; confirm the result in Manage My Booking.

Tips & Tricks

Booking:

  • Check ba.com directly for sale fares—often better than OTAs
  • Avios + Money options can offer good value on expensive routes
  • Basic fares are fine for carry-on only travel but watch the no-change policy

At the Airport:

  • Heathrow T5: BA says to allow about 20 minutes from the main building to B or C gates and to wait until the gate is displayed before leaving A gates
  • Fast Track security: Included for Club Europe/World, available for purchase otherwise
  • Download the BA app for real-time gate info and notifications

Upgrades:

  • Same-day upgrades occasionally available at check-in
  • Use "Upgrade for Avios" option at booking for guaranteed upgrade

Earning Avios:

  • BA Amex cards (UK): Best way to earn significant Avios
  • Avios Shopping portal: 2-15 Avios per £1 at retailers
  • Partner transfers: Convert Amex MR, Chase UR (US) to Avios at 1:1
  • Household Account: Combine Avios with family for faster redemptions

Common Issues:

  • T5 can be congested during morning bank—arrive 2.5+ hours for long-haul
  • Club World seat design varies by aircraft; check the seat map for Club Suite availability
  • Short-haul catering varies by route and cabin; check the current onboard menu
